high or low multi?

I've heard from some people that it's better to keep your multi at 11x..... now i'm hearing it's better to have a higher fsb and lower the multi a bit???

Who do I believe?

Would raising or lowering the multi help if you didn't have the best brand of ram?? I've came to the conclusion that my ram is probably what is limiting my overclock?¿

Oh, also i'm going to throw one small question in here.... I just put a pny 7800gt video card in.... Upgraded drivers and such, i'm getting an aquamark score of between 80,000 and 85,000..... which i've seen similar scores from lower cards?? Should I do some more set up with the card? overclock it? or just go back to the conclusion that my two 512's of ultra duel channel ram is just ****?

Having a higher fsb versus a lower one is faster at identical cpu speeds. You should always choose the lower cpu multiplier if you can get the same speed with the lower one. Btw, ram can't lower your cpu OC because you can always run a divider if need be.

You would lower the Multi, raise the fab to raise the Ram speed. If your ram can't hand high clocks then dont lower the multi.

For instance:

FSB of 250 x 11 = 2750 and ram speed of 250
Now to get 2750 on 10x multi....
FSB of 275 x 10 = 2750 and ram spped of 275....

Now if your ram can't hand it,.... don't lower the muti. Also, theres more stress on the board as you increase the FSB

I havn't really tried changing the divider on my ram.... however I did leave everything on the ram to auto- when I changed the ram timings it didn't seem to be as stable, and so i've also read that this ram isn't very stable at low numbers.... right now it's 2.5-3-3-8.... I know i COULD raise those numbers, which i've also tried, but again, still doesn't seem to be as stable??

What kind of overclock should I expect with the 3500 venice? I've heard 2.7 is pretty easy on stock cooling, which I have upgraded cooling,.....

When I tested my ram's max fsb.... I didn't really have time to run prime95, but at 2.5-2-2-10 and at 7x multi my computer would start up around 320-330fsb.... I know it's not exactly a save stable clock, but i'm sure if I lowered my multi a bit then up'd the fsb, my ram could handle a number significantly less then 330?

I just started overclocking and making things go faster really confused me for a while. I'll try to help you out as best I can. To start OCing, I would recommend using a nice Windows program like Clockgen. Raise your FSB by 5 each time, then wait about 10 seconds to see if it crashes. When it finally does crash, go into the BIOS and set your FSB to that speed. Then come back into Windows, and run Prime95 for at least an hour or so to get a decent idea of whether or not its stable. Then take a look at CPU-Z. See what frequency your RAM is running at. If you have DDR400, you want to keep the frequency under 200. If it's over 200, go into your BIOS and set it to DDR333. Then boot back up and see if it's under 200. As long as it's under 200, keep repeating the process listed above. When you think you've reached a limit (either due to heat or just because you can't push it anymore), run Prime95 overnight and see how it goes. If P95 says you're stable, then good job overclocking my friend. If P95 says you're unstable, roll back your FSB and try again. Also, as you get to higher FSBs, you have to roll back your HTT mulitplier. FSB times HTT Multi should always be less than 1000. Hope that helped.

Most people consider clockgen the "noob" way to overclock?

i've done the "raise your fsb by 5" test for my ram, and my motherboard, and my processor... except I did it through bios... my max ram fsb is 320, my max mobo fsb is 345...

And i've got this rig running at 2.639 with fsb of 240 and multi 11x.... Prime95 ran for 24hrs.......

I understand the part of how to overclock, I'm just wondering if getting lower multi and higher fsb is better or not?? I've heard yes and no???

nvidia clockgen = noob (to do the tests through your bios should only take a few hrs.... test every different setting separately to find ur max.... and there's quite a few guides there to put together your max's and get a safe stable overclock.... however they dont' say anything about it being better to lower your multi and raise the fsb for the same clock speed??)

wanted to add one more thing.....

The main thing i do with this computer is play battlefield 2..... I'm debating on upgrading to 2gig of ram.... would this further limit my OC?

It would limit it a little, but you don't really need to OC much more. 2 gigs would help run BF2, and would only slightly limit your OC.
