a8nslipremium formatting issue (help me)

Thread Starter
ok so i finally got my asus a8n and i need some help with installing windows

i have 2 raptors so i plugged them into the nvidia raid ports (ports 1 and 2) then when i booted up i went into bios and enabled the nvidia raid controller
then on reboot i hit f10 and configured a raid 0 and i also made a driver floppy on my roommates comp

when installing windos i hit f6 then s and loaded both of the required drivers then windows begins to boot, hit f8 (licences agreement) now when it says what patitiion do you want to install windows on i pick the unpartitioned space and hit enter then it has me pick to formatt ntfs (quick or normal) now is where the problem is at when i do the long format it hangs at 100% complete and thats it, if i do a quick format it goes through 100% then trys to install windows but says that it could not format properly and to install windows on a different partition

ive tried checking all my connections both sata and power, the 2 hdds are brand new , ive tried to install windows on just on of the disc with out a raid setup and it does the same thing

and helpful input would be much appreciated thanks

Sounds to me like you went through all the steps properly. That's exactly how I set mine up. Now, have you tried setting up a RAID using any other RAID ports, other than 1 and 2? Like try 3 and 4? Also, when you went to install without a RAID, did you switch the HD cables over to the other SATA ports, the black ones I believe? Third, did you try the non-RAID install with both HD's, or just one?

I'm asking because I would like to determine whether your RAID controller is faulty or maybe it's one of the drives. I assume you've already checked BIOS settings for the RAID controller.

Maybe try to make another driver disk if one of these things doesn't check out.

Oh, wait. You are using the Black ports? That's incorrect. You wanna use the Red ports. Black ports are regular SATA, and yeah I guess that would include nVidia RAID, but the way I understood it, that was software based RAID for IDE drives, no? The red ports are for the Silicon Image RAID Controller, and that's what I'm using. What drivers did you make the disk for? We may have your problem solved.

I haven't had any problems with overclocking using the Silicon Controller for RAID. I'm not on a crazy overclock or anything, but I think it's safe to say it's stable enough. Couple of months with no problems.

I can't tell you for sure how to set up nVidia RAID, as I have never used it. I can tell you I don't recommend it.
