AMD XP 2400+ - Need Help Overclocking - Page 3

In which case I'm going to need a bit of help from all you experienced overclockers (looks in "The Duke"'s general direction)... So to help out, here are my current system specs (just got a gig dimm of PC3200 today, installing tonight).

Asus A7V8X Motherboard (333mhz fsb)
AMD Athlon 2400+ Thoroughbred B (Current 133 x 15 on pc2100)
1024mb x 1dimm Ultra PC3200 DDR400
Ultra X-Connect 500w PSU
256mb BFG GeForce 6800Ultra OC
Temps:
33/32 Idle
41/37 Load

So tonight (Now that I have a gig dim of PC3200) I'm going to try to overclock it a bit and see what happens. But I could use some help in what settings I should use initially, or any settings that people KNOW are safe to overclock to with the above setup.

I'm thinking of making the new settings: 200 x 10 for a stock speed setting, since the PC3200 is DDR400 and then changing the multiplier from there. My bios has multipliers unlocked up to 18, and the fsb unlocked to 260 (which would obviously fry my boards). So I seem to have a number of options for overclocking...

Would a setting of 200 x 11.5 be too much for the board to safely overclock, as I've seen a number of people easily hit 2.3ghz on this chip. In addition I'm looking at picking up a Thermaltek Big Typhoon and sticking it on the XP 2400+ until I get the new X2 3800+. I'm sure this would help, but I'm not sure if it's necessary at the moment... currently my stock cooler is a 4200+rpm Aluminum Heatsink (about 52+ cfm).

Just looking to hit about 6000pts on 3DMark05 as I've seen a number of XP 2400+ users pulling it off with 2.3ghz+ settings... Currently I'm at 4717 points. Any and all help would be much appreciated as I'm certainly no expert in the field of overclocking...

Thanks again!
i hade a killer 2400(green)that would go 2500!!!
it was a unlocked one and could use any multi
it was a great chip and allmost riveled my 2600m....which went to about 2.8 Good Luck!!

Ok great!

So whatever the stock timings are on the PC3200 I'll be working on those (it arrived yesterday but the office was close so now I can't pick it up till after the holiday!!! grrrrr...), and by then my Big Typhoon and Arctic 5 will have shown up... I'll have all the pieces to work with.

I'll start by putting the new HSF in there (with the upgraded 100cfm fan) and popping in the new PC3200, then setting the bios at 200 x 10 and check my temps and stability...

If everything is a go, I think I'll try 200 x 11 and see what I get... If it's stable at 200 x 11 then I'll start upping the fsb till it won't post... then reset, up the voltage a tick, and work with the fsb again...

Wash, rinse, repeat till I like the speed and I'm still under stable heat (below 50C). If I could hit 220 x 11 w/ that setup I would be shocked, and seriously happy... In fact anything above 205 x 11 would make me smile at which time I guess I could drop the multi to about 5 and start working on the ram timings...

Would it be better to get the fastest ram timings before I start changing the multi and fsb? In which case I would just start at 200 x 10 for stability... then drop the multi, work on the ram, get their max speed and start working on the multi x fsb... Which is the proper procedure? I'm assuming obtaining the fastest ram timings first.

Thanks for all of the help cdub998 and Duke, and thanks for the words of encouragement Renfeld...

I dont think there is a huge advantage to using the absolute fastest bus speed....consider running at 166+ by 13,14,0r 15 with a 2 2 2 5 t1 timing !

No no no. You want max fsb while keeping tight memory timmings at 1:1. This is what AMD ATHLON XP's love.

Being value RAM you may have to drop the fsb a little to under 200MHz and use a higher multiplier for the clock speed. This will then let you keep the better RAM timmings.

You would need to check on the SPD of the RAM modules first to predict your headroom.

cheers

Just a note. I looked at your build project just to see what you were getting and I highly recommend NOT getting 4 gigs of ram. You have almost $500 spent on ram. Instead, get a 2x1gig set of some ocz or something good. It will be much better than 4 gigs of ultra ram.

Have any good recommendations for the ram? I see a lot of people using corsair but I'm not sure exactly which sticks I should be picking up... 2 gigs of that would be best I'm assuming...

Possible to point to a good link for purchase?

*EDIT* Noticed you said OCZ... I'll take a peek. Now if my ram is DDR400 but the FSB on my chip is max 333mhz (Thoroughbred B), I can still set my fsb / multiplier to something like 200 x 10 (assuming its stable) right? It's not going to fry my chip.

New RAM showed up yesterday (still waiting on the new HSF), but in the meantime here is my current OC (looking forward to the new fan!)... Don't mind the pic setup I have a strange dual monitor configuration.

With that FSB you should be able to leave the multi at 14 or 15.

Yea... I didn't want to go any higher just yet w/out the new HSF... 200 x 10 wouldn't post, so when I get the new HSF I'll go 167 x 15 and then start bumping the fsb till it won't post again... then I guess I found her max. )

The A7V8X can only accept 333mhz fsb, so I'm figuring that's why it couldn't take the 200 x 10 multi... unless a more experienced user knows a better reason? I'm figuring it isn't voltage since I was at 1.75v... BTW: Anyone know what the cpu performance setting (optimal, turbo) is in the A7V8X Bios?
