Power supply w/ DC pump

Alrighty.
So I finally seem to have the ability to invest in a water cooling kit and I am looking at WCing the GPU and CPU. The specs are as below, in my Overclock.net rig specs. As you can see, I have a prescott so that's going to run a little hot. I also have an X800XT that seems to OC well on air, so I want to keep that cool as well. However, because I am not going to OC my processor, I dont need a northbridge block, and I probably don't need the absolute best kit in the world. Thus, the parts I chose are:

--Black Ice Xtreme Dual II (2x120mm at relatively low rpm)
--Apogee or Swiftech 6002 (if I can find one, its cheaper)
--Maze4 acetal (low profile)
--D5 pump.

This is all going to be on 1/2" tubing, but I am wondering about a few things. Is this pump too much for my loop? Is there something that will work just as well, be DC powered and maybe a little less? Mostly I am worried about the 480W PSU I have. I only have one hard drive (and only will, ever, because of my externals), only one gpu, and don't really seem to draw a lot of power outside the CPU. So I figured I would be okay putting this extra stress on the 12V rail. Anyone else think this is okay? Thanks in advance.

what power supply is it exactly - the wattage rating doesn't mean squat - its the overall quality of the PSU behind the wattage that determines if its suitable for the job or not


but you'll probably be fine - the D5 draws an absolute max. of 24w on the 12v line

If you use Power(Watts) = I (Current, which in this case is 1.4) * Volts (12), you get 16.8 Watts.

Pretty much I just want to make sure that I can keep everything stable. I mean, if you think of your generic (but quality) power supply, would most be able to handle the load I am putting on it?


Also, I was thinking about taking my computer into my engineering lab at school and putting an oscilliscope to the rails and seeing what kind of noise this puts on the rails (the pump that is). Then, maybe I can get my circuits professor to help me reduce any noise (I think I saw a review somewhere that said it caused a decent amount of 'gibba gabba' on the rails as it ran). *shrug* Just a kookie science project, I guess.

I would do that if I had the equipment. I think that the little cylinder that goes on the wires reduces line noise, but I'm not sure. Your generic PSU should be able to handle 1.4 amps, if not I would be very surprised. Even a small 200 Watt PSU could do that. Quality PSU's have 34+ amps on the 12 rail.

There may be an issue with cross loading the rails. Some psu's require a draw of a certain amount to balance the output of the different rails. This means that your 12v live amperage will change if your 5v or 3.3v lines aren't being used enough. Basically your 12v line wont supply full amperage unless there is a heavy draw on the other rails also.
I just ordered a little cheapie 450w psu to run my pump and fans.
