Advice to upgrading my build

Thread Starter
My current is nothing special.

Mobo: Asus P5N-E SLI
GPU: 8600 GTS
RAM: 2 GB CORSAIR XMS DDR2 something idk
PSU: 480 Watt something
HDD: 320GB and two 750GB WD Caviar Blacks in RAID 0
CPU: Core 2 Duo 2.67Ghz
OS: Vista 32bit

I recently got a Black Magic Intensity Pro and mainly going to upgrade some things for working with video from that.

What would be to better use for uncompressed video rendering and such and all that, getting 2 extra gigs of RAM right now or getting a better GPU ($140 and under)? Also would I need a new PSU as well?

In the future I'll be upgrading the CPU as well but I'd rather the others first.

your psu should be fine as long as you dont sli or anything =]

what cpu do you have?

I think you should upgrade your gpu - others may say ram.
for under $140, you can get something like this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-514-_-Product

it's a gts 250 and you get $15 rebate so it's $139.99 or you can buy a different brand which is cheaper

hmm, ddr2 is a problem as of now

if u get 2gb right now, and realize you need more later, it wont be cheap
while ddr3, on the other hand, is phasing out ddr2 and going mainstream.

but this also means you have to grab a different mobo and stuff ><

i think i would go with gpu upgrade

you can always take the gpu to another build, but you cant necessarily take your ddr2 ram to another build.

Core 2 Duo 2.67Ghz CPU right now. Will upgrade to a Core 2 Quad later or if I go with a new build completely then probably just an i7, which will not soon though.

You will see the most improvement by picking up a quad-core CPU. The P5N32-E SLI is IMO likely the best of it's generation, but compared to what is available now, it pretty much falls off the comparison chart. Consider upgrading to an i5/i7 X55/X58 system at this point. Intel is dropping it's prices on many components next month. Check this out.

I just bought a Q9650 and I love it. However, I regret buying it. I would rather have bought an i7 and new MB than spend what I did on that Core2Quad.

That a a great recommendation. You may do fine with a GTX 220 too.

Also, I did not notice you only have 2GB Ram. I would definitely pick up another 2GB. Even if you plan to upgrade to a DDR3 MB pretty soon, the benefits you will see with more ram is huge!

For video editing it's almost all CPU and RAM (unless you got some CUDA capable (i.e. hardware accelerated) software). Quad-core CPU if you don't have one, and 4GB of RAM (you'll need a 64-bit OS) will be the best things you can do for the software.

If you're only a dual-core right now, buy the 4GB of RAM, install a 64-bit OS and then you're dual-core will be working a lot faster even without upgrading it, and down the road drop a quad-core in it (or swap it out for the i5's or i7's).

But right now, upgrade your RAM and move to a 64-bit OS will be the biggest upgrade for the least money. And so you know, your existing CD-Key for Windows will work on 32 or 64 bit windows, you just need the 64-bit install disk to get 64-bit.

Is the CD Key the product ID I see in the System section from Control Panel? I bought my pc prebuilt a long time ago and I really don't think they give me the CD for Vista.

Also I was basing this around money. I've got like $140 ish or so, what should I do with this? What would be the biggest impact? Don't worry about the OS I can get that without the money...

$140 isn't going to get you a CPU worth upgrading for. So, RAM definitely!
