Extreme slow HDD

Thread Starter
Hello,

I just want to reinstall a friends PC and make some backup before from the HDD to an USB2 HDD. To copy files are very very slow. It means ~100-300 kb/s. With this speed the backup takes not minutes but days
The PC is an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ / 512MB RAM / 80GB Diamond Max Plus 9 7200rpm/8MB cache. I use Win XP Professional and the drive is formatted with NTFS.

Any idea why it can be so slow?

Thanks!

It was defragmented some days ago and Windows says defragmentation is not needed.
The HDD is now in ATA-100 mode.
SMART info shows no errors.
There is no other drive on the IDE1 interface.

What is interesting is that sometimes for a minutes or so it can copy files with speed ~2500-3000kB/s independent from file size. And sometimes the PC do nothing. I mean coping is in progress but no HDD activity for some seconds and CPU usage is only 4-5%. No other programs are running.

Crazy idea, but try taking that drive out and putting it in another computer, and seeing if its the drive thats faulty or some configuration in the original pc.
