core i7 920 / Asus P6X58D - Page 2

Thread Starter

OK so it's been way too long for this build (nearly a year). I had some unexpected expenses that delayed my purchase but now I have all the parts but the drives. I'm wondering how to set up my drives. The plan is first to have a machine which can edit video using Premiere Pro. Secondarily, the plan is to support a variety of other duties I have including software development, Counterstrike, Supreme Commander, and daily desktop workstation.

The parts:
ASUS P6X58D Premium, gift.

, $271
Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme-1366, gift
Corsair TX750 psu, $69.99 after rebate
, $199
ASUS GeForce GTX 470, $230

The question now is what kind of drive setup do I want? My buddy wants to sell me a pair of Samsung Spinpoint F4 drives (2TB each, 5400 rpm) but I'm wondering if I should get these 7200RPM 1.5 TB seagate drives from newegg or perhaps these 1 TB 7200 rpm drives, only $50instead. The 7200 rpm drives are not particularly well-rated by folks.

Most importantly, what's a good configuration for the drives? The mobo supports RAID 0, 1, 10, and 5. My brother has discouraged me from using 5 because of the write performance concerns. I'm also open to a non-RAID setup or perhaps using windows 7 to raid-type functionality.

Your comments would be MUCH appreciated! I want to get these parts ordered ASAP!

For anyone who's interested I found this thread discussing the best drive setups for a Windows Adobe Premiere system.
