Seagate Speaks About Maxtor! - Page 2

Hi Burn,

Well put! I think we'll have to "wait and see" about this merger. Hitachi bought out or merged or took over IBM's hard drive line and the quality of the "IBM" line has improved. What it really means is that we now have the big 3. Hitachi, Western Digital and Seagate. I hope the competition amongst them remains strong, because that is what's good for us the consumer.

Take care, :-)

I have never had a problem with maxtor, if I'm not mistaken they are the only brand to produce an 133 IDE drive.

This is easily the most assanine reply ive ever heard. My little 60 gig maxtor diamond max plus 9 has never given me any probs at all. Its been through about 10-15 reformats and reinstalls and still no problems what so ever. When Seagate takes over Maxtors fabrication facilities then yes there is a possibility of these phantom crap outs of the drives made in the facilities due to the fact the same machines are used to fab and assemble the drives. On the other hand if there was a problem with the drives assembly or parts then in with the new company will come new QA people so i am quit sure that if Seagate wishes to keep thier good name that they would certainly know of any issues with the fabrication or assembly at Maxtors plants and correct the problem before Seagate drives are produced on the Maxtor equipment lines.

To be fare, I've had my 80 GB Maxtor ATA drive for six years and it's still running with no bad sectors. However, since I've been working in a computer shop, I've seen more dead Maxtor's than anything. I'm glad Seagate bought them out because Seagate is a decent company (read as: better than Maxtor).

Regardless, my money now goes to Western Digital because I've seen only one bad drive out of the countless number I've installed as upgrades or put into new computer builds. They're also the easiest company to get an RMA from in my experience.

I was talking with a field rep. from our distributor today and he said to expect the Maxtor name to disappear within the next six months. To answer a question asked earlier in this thread, Seagate will be bound by law to honor Maxtor's warranties. This doesn't mean that much... You would be surprised how many drives actually have no warranty beyond the 30 day mark.

Sounds like a good idea if Seagate can bring the quality and reliability to Maxtor that, imo, Maxtor lack.

I've had 4 Maxtor HDDs fail on me, one after the other, they are, in my experience, very unreliable. On the flip side, I once had a Seagate HDD for 9 years that was second hand (and at least 2 years old) when I got it! It would still be running now if I hadn't chucked it for being 800MB!

Since my Maxtor experiences I have only bought Seagate as I know the drives to be extremely reliable and robust with a non-operation shock tolerance well in excess of any other drive I've looked at, which is great when you buy the drives on-line!

Highly-Annoyed

I currently have an 80GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 and a 200GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 that are on my desk but that had faithfully served me for over a year and a half, those 2 drives were replaced by my new Maxtor MaXLine III 300GB and I put 2 of them in my brother's computer in RAID 0 and none of my Maxtors (or my Seagate for that matter) have ever failed me and IMO they are top notch.

Yeah, I was told that by the retailers (two on-line, one in a physical shop)... "Bad batch"... What happened to QA? How can Maxtor send out "bad batches" for sale? A bad batch should be spotted in QA testing and stopped from going to sale... Hopefully the Seagate people can sort out the poor QA over at Maxtor...
