1st time AMD build - need advice

Thread Starter
Hello. I've been an avid fan of the forum here for quite sometime and decided it's time to take the plunge. I will be using this system for gaming - want to start playing some of the newer games like COD MW2 - and I love photoshopping. I'm not one for duel monitors. I currently have a 20" wide Dell 5ms (it's a 1680X). Someday I willl get a 1920X +. This is my current setup that has been faithful to me over the years:

P4III 3.0ghz
3G OCZ
X800XT
XP 32bit
Nine Hundered case

This is what I have put together. I've never built an AMD setup before but I have been really impressed with what some of the others have said about them. I budgeted $1500 but of course I would like to shave a bit off if possible.

Please be candid - again, this is my first AMD build. I'm just unsure as to compatibility of the mobo-processor-ram (if they are a good combo). On the AMD site for this processor, the Crosshair III is not listed as supported but on the Asus site the 165 125w shows as being supported. Also, I'm not too sure if the 5870 is way overkill (remember, I will only have one monitor). Originally I was specing 4890 but the new 5000 series cards came out and I'm kind of at a loss. Never planned on crossfiring the 4890 - just never have been one for it. Considering what I'm upgrading from, I'm just stoked.

I have a brand new Vista 64 Ultimate that I have never opened and planned on using it on my new build.

I've never over-clocked, and I most likely won't unless it's really simple (which is what I understand from the forums) with this mobo/processor.

Seeing what I am currenlty using I know whatever I get will be a tremendous leap forward in performance for me - LOL

Thank you for taking the time to read thru all this. Thank you again for any advice you may be able to provide.

None of your links are working for me. The CPU looks good but if you want to save around $20 you can get the 955BE C3. The motherboard is probably good if you want to spend that much. If you want a HD5870 I'd go with the Asus version since it's cheaper, has software voltage control, and I believe has a higher BIOS OC limit than other cards. I'd go with two Samsung F3 1TB hard drives as they are newer and faster than the Caviar Blacks (though it's out of stock right now, which happens a lot). I've heard good things about the storm sniper so that would be good. Though I'd highly recommend my case, the AZZA Solano 1000. I don't know what everything else is because of the bad links.

You'll have to re-link those all, their all bad links

This is just a personal opinion on experience, Asus boards are amazing, tons of features, but only when you get a working one. Of the 3 different socket systems I've built with asus theres always at least one RMA before I get a working one. Tons of people here have had issues such as the same, but this goes with any computer company, sadly it's becomming more an issue with asus as of late which sucks cause they make really solid board when their working right.

I'd personally go with a gigabyte.

Everything else looks decent from what I can tell. Oh and if the cooler wasn't the Corsair H50, get that instead

Sorry about the links - they should be working now. I went ahead and added a different mobo and GPU just in case - just wanting to see what advice was out there.

Again, I really appreciate all the comments and look forward to ordering this week.

Very nice you should be happy.

However if it was me I would get an Intel SSD 80 Gen 2 SSd + the WD. And yes for me it would be essential!

To balance out as the SSD runs about $250 on amazon, get a 955 c3/ 5850 and oc / 750w Corsair PSU.

Overall this will be a much faster system if you do any kind of general computer use or multitasking.

Cooler master Case is Nice, but I would still take a Antec 900 V2 over it. Maybe consider keeping you case and placing the money towards something else, and paint the inside of your Antec 900 v1 black? Just an idea.

Oh and modular PSU is not worth it, will cause more trouble than help.

I would stick with the crosshair, I have the DDR2 Version of the M4a79, its a killer board, but is known to have some random problems ( Just had to RMA mine to get the SATA ports fixed). Other than that ^ what tech-boy said and you'd have a pretty sick setup
