id also say go with a gigabyte board, if you drop down to a 850w psu you can save some money, I dont think you realy need a 1000w psu

I budgeted $1500 but it would be nice if I could shave a bit off - I don't know how other than the PS - but I'm cool either way.

As for the BIOS flashing, not really sure if the Crosshair III needs to be flashed for the 965 125W - hoping you all could advise on that.

Thanks for the quick responses - I feel like an addict right now just itching to order.

You should really consider my SSD option. You should watch some Youtube videos, because it is really hard to tell the difference without seeing one in action. You will not believe how much the cpu waits on the hdd. On my computer heck even the computer moves faster in Chessmaster, and programs open with the cpu at 100% (they open instantly).

Overall it makes a World of difference. However if this is a strict gaming computer, and it will only be turned on for that, then a SSD is probably not necessary.

If you want a HD5870 I'd go with the Asus version since it's cheaper, has software voltage control, and I believe has a higher BIOS OC limit than other cards. I'd go with two Samsung F3 1TB hard drives as they are newer and faster than the Caviar Blacks (though it's out of stock right now, which happens a lot). I've heard good things about the storm sniper so that would be good. Though I'd highly recommend my case, the AZZA Solano 1000. I don't know what everything else is because of the bad links.
Amazon has 4 new Samsung F3 1TB at this time according to http://www.watchmyitems.com/?item=B001U3S5S0 with free shipping. If they are out of stock by the time you are ready to purchase, you could camp out at that page and be alerted when Amazon restocks.

Would anyone happen to know if the Crosshair III supports the new 965 125W without updating the BIOS?

I'm going to hold off on the SSD as of this time but I'm going to change to one of the new Samsung F3 1TB drives - thanks for the input on that.

I really dig the Asus and OCZ brands - but I really appreciate everyone's input. Please continue to post any further info on this build - I'd love to order it tomorrow or Friday.

I will be using this system for gaming - want to start playing some of the newer games like COD MW2 - and I love photoshopping. I'm not one for duel monitors. I currently have a 20" wide Dell 5ms (it's a 1680X). Someday I willl get a 1920X +. This is my current setup that has been faithful to me over the years:

P4III 3.0ghz
3G OCZ
X800XT
XP 32bit
Nine Hundered case

This is what I have put together. I've never built an AMD setup before but I have been really impressed with what some of the others have said about them. I budgeted $1500 but of course I would like to shave a bit off if possible.

Please be candid - again, this is my first AMD build. I'm just unsure as to compatibility of the mobo-processor-ram (if they are a good combo). On the AMD site for this processor, the Crosshair III is not listed as supported but on the Asus site the 165 125w shows as being supported. Also, I'm not too sure if the 5870 is way overkill (remember, I will only have one monitor). Originally I was specing 4890 but the new 5000 series cards came out and I'm kind of at a loss. Never planned on crossfiring the 4890 - just never have been one for it. Considering what I'm upgrading from, I'm just stoked.

I have a brand new Vista 64 Ultimate that I have never opened and planned on using it on my new build.

I've never over-clocked, and I most likely won't unless it's really simple (which is what I understand from the forums) with this mobo/processor.

Seeing what I am currenlty using I know whatever I get will be a tremendous leap forward in performance for me - LOL

Thank you for taking the time to read thru all this. Thank you again for any advice you may be able to provide.

I would definitely go with the 850HX instead of the 1000W. Additionally the 850 HX is much smaller.

Really nice coolers

Other than that looks like a really nice build. If you have a high budget I would start looking at Lian-Li, Silverstone and Thermaltake cases. You can get a nice aluminum case that will last you for several builds and mods.

I don't know. Personally I think it should recognize it just fine. The C3 965BE is just a more refined version of the same chip. Though I'm not super familiar with that board so I don't know for sure. It's just my opinion on the matter.

I do have a couple suggestions. Zalman doesn't make competitive CPU coolers like they used to. I'd go the the great bang for your buck XIGMATEK HDT-S1283. The power supply is overkill but it really doesn't hurt at all and leaves you plenty of upgrade breathing room. Though if you do feel you don't need it you could go with the Corsair 750HX. In regards to the video card being overkill. It definitely would be major major overkill with your Dell 20" 1680x1050 monitor. Consider this, you could buy a HD5770 which would be perfect for your current monitor. Then when you upgrade your monitor hopefully Nvidia's Fermi will be out (I've heard around March). Then thanks to Fermi hopefully there will be price drops on the HD5870 and probably a higher clocked version called the HD5890 will be released. So you would have many options. You could buy a second HD5770 which scales great in Crossfire or get the HD5870 or the new HD5890 at better prices.
