I've been having the GSOD issue since I recently purchased an xfx hd5870...The RMA'd the first one and was getting ready to do the same with the second one. I've tried every trick I could find that showed any promise whatsoever and nothing worked. It was bad enough in my case to where I was able to play a game for no more than 10-15 min at a time before I'd GSOD.

The sole reason for me registering here is to say THANK YOU to whoever it was that posted this little how to. I went from GSOD'ing every 10 minutes to playing BC2 all night without a single crash. My $400 paperweight is now a $400 kick arse graphics card able to play BC2 at 1920x1200 with all settings on high, 8xAA, 16xAF and maintain 70fps or above almost all the time. I'm obviously very pleased 8)

Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to post up that how to. It's really made my evenings a lot more enjoyable!

Hi guys, hope this thread been alive.
I've changed the EnableUnofficialOverclocking = 0 to 1 but MSIAB 1.6 wont let me make any change on core voltage (grayed). Ticked the options in settings also.

I've got no idea whats going on.
CCC Overdrive disabled btw.
running on Win7 Ultimate x86 - latest Catalyst 10.6 (buggy ones btw)

You have to have a reference model 5850. Only ref model cards have unlocked voltage. Sry.

Your icooler isnt ref.

Hmm... I swear seen somewhere that could be possible volt tweaks in this kind of v2 cards. Already knows the uP6213 limitations but maybe could be a trick (just a wish) to bypass that voltage regulator.

So it means that I have to stick with the limited OC options offered by CCC & MSIAF no matters what I try (Flashing ASUS/MSI/5870 Bios)...

Setting this flag from 0 to 1 just removes the clocks limits normally imposed by ATI/CCC. It has absolutely nothing to do with voltage control, on any card, ever.

There's a separate flag to enable voltage control, right there in that same file. If you enable it by changing it from 0 to 1, and there's still no voltage control (after a restart of AB), it (almost certainly) means that your VRM doesn't support software voltage mods.

Also, there's no such thing as 'bypassing' your VRM. Either it has the physical ability to vary voltages based on commands from software, or it doesn't. Sometimes though, the software may not programmed to be able to manipulate a particular VRM though, and sometimes in this scenario support ends up being possible later on, or through another tool. That's why I said 'almost' above

Thanks for enlightening me brettjv.
Using the MSI afterburners unofficial overclocking method atm: 900/1200/1.088v
Temps: 50ºc /45% fan (kombustor/unigine/gaming)

My VGA comes with that VRM so theres no volt option anywhere. Sigh.

I've tested this setup with:

Dirt2 (max) ok.
BFBC2 (almost maxed out) random crashes (crappy 10.6 drivers)
CoDMW2 (max) ok.

What do you think, is that good?

Bottom line: Theres one thing that actually is driving me nuts, youtube playback is a
PITA, after 2 or 3 sec of video playback the screen (display) turns white, VGA driver
succesfully recovered notification balloon and youtube video is green now, with
sound only, newest flash drivers installed (10.1) btw.

This is a very informative thread. I'm currently using a MSI 5830. I have unlocked the unofficial to 1, as well as the voltage monitor and control. I notice that even though i could see the change in temp and V in Afterburner and it pass Kombuster 20min stability test as well as the 3d mark Vantage test on High, it will crash when i start a game.
More recently even Starcraft 2 will crash after only a few min of playing. I know this must be the card because sometime it would say Driver failed and recovered; sometimes i get the brown screen.

My previous MSI 5770 had none of these problems. Any suggestions? or advise?

Thanks
