[Intermediate] Project µ.R.G.E (Micro Rig for Gaming and Entertainment) [56k DEATH]

Well hey guys.

This is my first case mod ever, not including my fan in a box or the hole i put in my old case to install a pushswitch

I've been planning to build a LAN Box for quite some time now, just for use in my MAME cabinet or during lan parties, so this is my chance.

So I'm modding a Silverstone SG06.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Specs of the PC that will reside in the case:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What I plan on doing is
- Windows on all sides .....
- Painting the interior black (probably powdercoating it) .....
- Modding a 7" screen into the front of the case .....
- Cable Management with MDPC sleeving .....
- Extra fans for intake/exhaust .....
- Internal Speaker System .....
- Possible Internal Wifi adapter ..... X
- Possible touch panel for the 7" Screen ..... X
- Possible Internal Webcam
- Modding the case to fit the PSU (if the 300W doesn't cut it)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Going through design process at the moment. Updates soon!

CLICK FOR END PRODUCT.

So I've ordered all the components, AND I picked up a Dremel at the local hardware store

i found some more inspiration in a promotional magazine xD
looking through a HiFi store's speaker section, I thought; Why not put some speakers inside aswell?
now this will only be done after I've fitted in everything else and i have extra space.

some of my brainstorming during work my free time

so after a quick sketchup session, I've decided it would be best on top, like this:

I've also ordered a Nanovision Mimo 710-S, 7" USB Screen.

It's ideal because I don't know the interior of a lot of these screens, and this one was designed for the specific purpose of being small and compact, meaning it will be the easiest to mod into a case (but maybe not so easy to take apart)

parts should start arriving Monday, so until then!

Main components arrived, Just waiting on Speakers, Screen and Modding Supplies (Sleeving, Acryllic, etc.)
So I've put the system together and it runs beautifully.

OK so just an update, the 7" screen arrived a while back and i also bought the speakers I'll be putting into the case.

The screen surpassed my expectations. It's almost as bright as my 24" screen, and the picture is crisp and clear - perfect! I thought it would be the kind of quality you get out of those 7" LCD picture frames - dull colour, blurry image, but it's actually VERY good!!! The screen does not make use of the GPUs power - so this is perfect for gaming where I want most of my processing power on the game - especially for the graphics. I did some tests and the screen is capable of running Windows Aero and some basic 3D games (like UT:GOTY). very impressed.

Measured it up vaguely, and I think i can get it to fit. will take some modding, but that's what we're here for, right?

Also went to the local computer store and picked up some speakers... they're also USB powered, so this should be a synch to hook up and find power for. Like the screen, they're suprisingly clear, and quite loud considering... much more than I need

They're surprisingly similar in size to the ones I modelled in Sketchup - Bonus!

However, when i took a look at the insides, was a bit dissapointed: Only one of the two 'speakers' actually had sound drivers in them!

Well, School starts in a couple of days (here in Melbourne, Australia)
so I probably won't get to start modding, at least for a couple of weeks.

until then!

Started modding today!

start build log: now.

Day 1: Let's see if this screen fits

Taking apart the screen was fairly easy. few screws (6) and that baby was outta' there

The bare screen in all its shining glory!

Then, took a dremel to the front bezel of my case. cut out some plastic so that the screen would sit flush up against the aluminium.

after the hole in the plastic...

What it looks like from the inside.

finally - the screen mounted in the front.

IT IS A TIGHT fit. but also a perfect one

and when the bezel is installed back onto the case.

All in all, a good day's hour's work

next time, on Chewman's Mod. TV: Windows galore!

great news! i picked up a 150GB WD velociraptor for my build, so it will be even more awesome! onto modding:

More screen work!
since this was the first mod that I knew I wanted done, I made sure it fit well.

So after much debate on what sort of cutting technique i wanted to utilise,
I settled on the "Dremel a pilot hole then jjigsaw it" method.

took me a long while to measure out the hole, but after all my measurements, I finally got my hole marked out.

Piloted a hole with the Dremel:

and used my trusty jigsaw to do the rest:

the Window looked goooood:

but the question on my mind: "Will it fit?!"

SUCCESS!!!!!

semi-reassembled the case, sanded the edges down a tiny bit:

Next time: Speaker holes and Side/Top windows! hmmm, we'll leave that for later.

wow long time since last update.
been real busy with school, although I hope to get a lot of work done during the holidays in a weeks time.

Spent all of the 3rd modding day sleeving the PSU. Did about 50%: everything except a couple of Molexes (which I'm planning to solder together and mod, and the 24-Pin ATX cable:

I used the 'staple' method, inserting a bent stable into the socket to remove the cables:

That day, I also soldered a USB cable to the LCD screen's controller board:

!!!!!! A WILD PACKAGE APPEARS !!!!!!

PACKAGE USES H50!
IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE!

(also, a fan and some cathodes )

Untill tommorow; I get to do a test fit with the H50

YAY!

so, finished sleeving the PSU (and had to enlargen the hole to fit tha mass of cables though) but I must say, it looks awesome. well worth the hours spent on it.

The test fit was fun, finally got to see if the screen would fit with the H50, and the H50 with the fan, the motherboard, Optical etc etc.

Must say, it fits, but it is VERY TIGHT. Especially the fan with the 5770:

But at least it works

having a bit of a break for now, be back in a weekish.
need to start making a LOT of progress, quickly... VCE studies (final Secondary school year for you non-aussies) are killing me.

My motherboard died somehow, when I plugged in the optical drive
so now, I'm out of a mobo, and will be sending it back soon.

at least modding doesn't require one

just a small update - be back later.
