Woop! got a new fan in

(The Clear one is the new one by the way.)

I had the black one already and It's a great fan, but the orange really doesn't suit my colour theme.
So I bought the second one to swap over the fan blades

BEFORE:

AFTER:

with the grill on....

Alongside the fan, I also recieved a Scythe fan controller and 20 mosfet heatsinks - ITX overclocking win.

Took the board out of the controller so it could go into the case.

Where the knobs will go...

and where I plan to put the Board

Installed!

YAY! Did some DVD drive modding today
By examining the existing dvd drive, I Concluded that I needed to put an indentation in the top of the lid if I wanted to make a functional Transparent DVD drive.

To do this, I used the CNC machine at school
It actually turned out really well; I made the indentation then cut around it.

It worked decently well, althought note the drill bits holding the cover down.
This was because I needed to source new screws to reach through the acrylic into the DVD drive. but more on that later.

in action:

ok so it took me literally 2 and a half months to find screws with a small enough thread yet long enough to reach through the acrylic. I went to every hardware store, fastener bolt specaillist and electronics outlet in a 15km radius. I found suitable screws at a small hobby store; the screws were designed to be used on those really elaborate miniature train models.

Here's it anyway:

Ok, so back to windows

As it turned out, Without making an entire new cover for the SG06, the way that it is made constricts us in regards to the windows.

It is impossible to mount a piece of plexi or acrylic on the inside of the SG05/6 cover, due to the way the cover interlocks with the chassis.

I considered putting the windows on the outside, like many others have done, but I wanted a more cleaner look, so I opted, instead, to mount the window to the chassis. The windows on this build will not be connected to the cover in any way. this allows me to achieve a more cleaner look.

Then I started on the windows themselves.

A couple of pilot holes and a low of jigsaw-ing later....
This is a photo after I had cut two of the windows. The side on the far side has not yet been cut.

When i started to jigsaw the last window, however, I realised the importance of safety goggles. steel chards in eyes are not fun, althought it did not create any major injuries, nor did it stop me from modding

What it looked like after the windows were finished:
(Except for the top and sorry for the blurriness - phone camera )

Also planned out the top, and speaker location:

hint hint for the next couple of updates

Take one Verbatim USB-Powered Speaker System. (see post 5.)
Minus speakers. What you get is an empty shell, with a neato USB speaker driver:

And another internal USB header.

Solder the two together, and you get an internal speaker driver with no need for an external jack

I did find, however, that the Blue LED on the speaker driver was not only out of the colour scheme, but on the wrong side, making it a lot less compact:

I replaced that quicksmart with a High Bright white LED, and put it on the more logical side.

Then, proceeded to finish off that top window.
Taped it off, and cut it out.

deadline is coming closer, need to get a moove on

I have been dreading this part from day 1.
I have tried on similar steel to cut medium sized holes with a hole saw. It does not work (or I'm just too cheap to buy a decent hole cutter). So, I stole a nibbler from school (dw, I asked, and I'll return it) and decided to nibble out the holes by hand.

Started with a few pilot holes.

Note how I failed epically, the two sides are not symettrical. Luckily I picked up on this fault early on, and I was able to correct it quicksmart. Nibbled out each hole one by one. a long process, but necessary.

Midway though, I wanted an idea of what it would look like.

The holes after I had finished Nibbling.....

AND OUT COMES THE DREMEL!!!

Done. (Click for Large)

Next time: Filing, sanding, and spraypaint

Went to the shop and picked aup a few more goodies today:

Filed and sanded down all the coarse holes

Then, when the speaker holes were all good to go, I used one of these:

to do this:

which also incurred this:

:/ Doesn't look bad in the picture, but a month later; It's scarred up pretty well.
Live and learn fellas.

got the whole cover stipped down, then did the hard drive/optical drive holder.

and Tested the two different Black spraypaints I used.

so it's painting time.
First Day, I got the PSU into pieces and taped off everything I didn't want to be black/have paint on.

I also put a small hole into the side of the PSU; this would hold the Fan Controller in place.

aaannddd lots of matte black spray paint, which also acted as a primer for the glossy parts.

The Next Day, I got up at 07.00 to whack on the next layer before I went out.

Dreary day; had to get all the pieces in and do it in the garage. :/

When I got back, the back of the PSU was all done

nice and glossy.

Then taped off the bottom of the main chassis, and sprayed that with some nice black gloss spraypaint.

While that all dried the next day, I got the filed the front bezel some more to get a more smoother finish on the screen window:

and then I re-assembled the PSU

I think it turned out well:

so all the paint dried, and I decided to put it all together to see what it turned out like.

Note the back, i quite like the contrasting matte/gloss:

and that hole that I drilled?

so I got a new shipment from PerformancePCs.
Australian computer stores suck.

got me a nice new vandal resistant switch:

(and some other stuff)

but it didn't fit!

so I used a drill to make the hole bigger, filed it down and sanded it with the dremel attachment.

The end Result:

and how it fits:

Straight after this was done, I sent the front bezel off to the Anodizers to cover up those pesky scratches and the bare aluminium exposed on the screen bezel.
