This is never on ESPN. The national title game is always on a local/free channel.

tsk tsk read the article.

OT - I personally see no appeal in watching things in 3D. Beyond the silly glasses, I just feel that there are so many more important things to do in this world than plopping in front of a TV and letting the man pump you full of consumerism every 12 minutes.

That's because there's no 3D content. Content has to be available in abundance before a strong demand forms in the market. No one really bought HDTVs en masse until there were multiple HD channels to watch.

(I find it funy that the article calls ESPN an innovator, or early adopter, or whatever, for HD broadcasts. They were very late to the party on my local Time Warner lineup.)

(24Hz for each eye minimum, in my opinion, for what it's worth.) In other words, a 240Hz TV will be of no more use than a 120Hz TV.
From what I've read on 3D stuff, I inferred that the extra MHz are needed to keep a "strongly lit" image going to your eye, or something to that effect. The 3D effect fails if the image isn't "bright". Apparently all 3D movie screens must be silver for this reason, to reflect the light from the projector much stronger than a white screen can.

Eh? The RealD glasses I have from Avatar just fit right over my regular glasses, no worries at all. Are you wearing gigantic 1970s Elton John glasses or something?

Now the first part I agree with. I don't believe that 3D TV will be truly ready for mass adoption until it is selectable on an ad-hoc basis. Kind of like pressing a button on your receiver to change the output from mono to stereo to 5.1 surround. Want to put on the glasses and watch a movie in 3D? Click a button to flip into 3D mode. Just want to watch the news or have the TV on in the background? Flip back to "mono" TV mode. This whole idea of separate channels that go dark for long periods of time, and that are in their own special cable tier at additional costs, irritates me. It's a necessary transition I suppose, my ideal end-state is probably pretty darn far away; but it's what 3D TV needs to be, period. (Short of holodeck adevntures, anyway!)

ABC and ESPN are owned by the same parent company (Disney). Since the BCS is on ABC, ESPN 3D could get the broadcast any time they want. Happens all the time here already...ESPN sort of "takes over" the local ABC affiliate's feed to show Ohio State football games when the national ESPN broadcast chooses to air another game.

What we don't get is regular, weekly NFL football, since ABC dosn't have that. I would find that much more valuable than a once-a-year BCS championshp game.

Yes, TV manufacturers went back in time to put out 3D-capable TVs once James Cameron released Avatar in present day so as to beat the film release.
What I was trying to get at is, the higher the speed, the better the effect. The broadcast will have to be sent at least at 120Hz I'm sure, but being that there are no 3D standards as of yet, that number might not be prove good enough in the long run. What I do know is that 60Hz TV's will not work. Being that ESPN is not sent "over the air", that doesn't matter anyways.

I will say though I have seen Avatar in 3d, and well my nvidia 3d glasses+monitor do a hell of alot better job making things 3d. Maybe due to the fact I can change the actual depth of the 3d to be much more intense but still its f'in awesome

Sorry to hijack, but are you saying your nvidia 3d setup is worth the money? Because I have been considering buying that.............

Just seems to expensive...but value is subjective.

But word of warning if you use Adobe products that access your 3D card and are on Windows 7: they may crash because of the NVidia 3D driver. I experienced this with Adobe Premeire Elements 7 and the trial of version 8. I never had any problems with this on Vista, it only started after my Win7 upgrade. Took some deep Google digging to find that the NVidia 3D driver (installed with the video driver by default) was the problem; uninstalling the 3D driver solved the problem completely. Maybe that has been fixed by now, it has been a few months; but just a caution.

For what it will probably cost to get set up with all the equipment you need for 3D tv and to subscribe to the programming - it would be cheaper to just go to the game ( and the 3D experience is ALMOST as good)
