Im helping my cousin build his pc. I gave him my old X700Pro card (AGP). Hes has used my pc alot of times and want me same setup (ya right..)

anyways this is what it I was planning so far... (limit 1600 Canadian WITH tax thats about 1400 US) He told me he will upgrade his mobo and card some in JAN or FEB.

athlon 4400+
OCZ Plat 2gigs
160gig Western Digital
Antec Trupower II 550W psu
Asrock 939Dual Motherboard
X700PRO 256mb vid card

I was wondering if I this will work right? Will anything bottleneck?

With that system, especially if he plays games a lot, I would get a better videocard, and then get only 1 gb of ram. But since your planning to give him your X700, it's ok he can get a better one later if it's not enough. He should like that system a lot, but you know if he's not looking for the best of the best perfrmance a X2 3800 will do him plenty

I would tone down to a single core processor and get a better video card right off the bat, since it's for gaming, right?

Also, I'd get a DFI or Asus rather than the ASRock.

it is for gaming, but I dont know if he will want it only for that. His other pc is a pentium 3 so he might want it for more than that. I chose that Asrock board because it has a AGP slot and PCI-E so maybe if he doesnt have enough for a new card and motherboard he can just get the card.

Well consider this:

If he's not doing any really heavy multi-tasking, there's no need for a dual-core CPU at this point in time. I'd say get an Opteron 148, a San Diego 3700+, or something in that range. With the price difference, he could probably afford a newer video card, maybe a 6800gs or 7800gt, depending on how much is left over(sorry, don't really have time to research prices for you). Then, he gets an Asus, DFI, or MSI motherboard, and overclocks it. Voila, killer rig he has.

ok nvrmind he has a bit more money. hes using an old case.

I basically came up with 2 setups

4400+
OCZ Plat 2gig
XFX 6800GS xxx
Western Digital 200gig
A8N32-SLI
Enermax Liberty 500W

or

x2 3800+
OCZ Plat 2gigs
Western D 160gig
Enermax Liberty 500W
A8N32-SLI

he told me he may be able to get another GS in a another week or 2 since its sort of cheaper. So hed have 2 in SLI.

Which should setup should I tell him to go for?

I would go with the first setup too be honest mate..Dula core isnt esential and the first system will be great for gaming with the 6800 there.

Well given you have a CAD $1600.00 budget to work with I would go as follows:

CPU AMD 64 3700+ San Diego..here..CAD $277.00
Motherboard DFI LANParty UT NF4 ULTRA-D..here..CAD $147.00
Gaphics card BFG Geforce 7800GTX OC 256Mb 460/1300MHz..here..CAD $655.00
RAM OCZ EL Platinum rev2 2x512Mb TCCD..here..CAD $206.00
PSU Seasonic S12-600HT 600W v2.0..here..CAD $201.00
Cooling THERMALRIGHT XP-120..here..CAD $ 65.00 and Panaflo 120mm 85cfm 35dBA..here..CAD $25.00

That should all add up to CAD $1576.00 and provide for good performance.

cheers..and be happy not mad !
