A64 3700+ -OR- Opteron 148 - Page 2

Nice post.. I was thinking about getting one or the other myself at tax time.

One thing I would also like to know though is what is a cheapest AMD CPU that wil hit 3.0ghz on an OC with Aircooling.

With extreme air cooling I would say the 146/148 opterons.
both can be had around $200

That's difficult to say... Most of the Opterons you see hitting 3GHz are 146's or 148's, which while not expensive, aren't the cheapest of the bunch. It's also heavily dependant on which stepping you get, and unless you want to try your luck at retail, you'll pay a steep premium for the good ones on ebay. Most of the current chips coming out of retail chains aren't doing 3GHz any more it seems, topping out around 2.8 or 2.9. My chip so far isn't capable of 3GHz, craps out around 2.9GHz ant 1.55 volts (the maximum allowed by my motherboard), but me and muffin (who has the same stepping as me on a 146) are picking at the thing together, and having realized we're both running heavily overclocked and powerful machines on 480 watt power supplies, are beginning to wonder if maybe that's the issue.

well, I know i can run 3.0 on mine stable, but with about 1.6v. Temps are right around 50-52c load because of the volts. Those would be your best bet. Other than that, possibly an fx series chip, but those are rediculously priced. Best bet is to try the opterons, and if you should fall a little short, 2.8-2.9, the 1M L2 cache will make it feel like a 3.0+ chip.

There's simply no guarantee of hitting 3.0 on air regardless of what chip you buy. Here's a pic of the fastest AMD chip I've seen on air around OC.net. It's a 3700 San Diego

well, I've got screenshots of my opty around 3125 running the 1M. And my time is faster. I wouldn't get a san diego, opterons are much better for overclocking

Your cpu is slower at identical clock speeds. There's no denying that, but that's still an impressive clock. Can you post a screenshot of your time beating that one? You should also post it in the benchmarks section. What was your time? I can't wait to see it!

my clock is slower, time if faster. Partly due to my memory. This system is a budget rig. I can get screenshots over 3.2. all air. Here's also my final wiring job, just a couple extra zips..and of course my micro-atx case.

Edit: just looked at benchmark section, never knew it was there.lol...looks like i have the quickest amd on air. sorry guys, dont make me try for more..
