I want to build an AMD Based Video Editing Rig

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I am in the new market for a PC. I would be using it for video editing, gaming and other general uses.

Here are what I have looked at so far

Asus A8N32-SLI Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800 OR AMD Opteron 165
2GB PC 3200 DDR2 RAM
Nvidia Quadro FX 1300 or Nvidia 7800GT
2 * 80GB SATA Hard Disk (Raid 1) (OS, APPS)
1 * 300GB Maxtor OneTouch (Storage)
Lite On DVD+/-RW Drive

Not too sure about the sound card.
Can someone suggest a case.

I need some suggestions as to whether these components will satisfy my needs. Also if you can give any other suggestions, it will be greatly appreciated.

First of all, AMD doesn't have a DDR2 mem capability. I would go with the Opteron because it has 2x1mb catch, compared the the 3800+ 2x512k, and you can easily OC it past 3800+ speeds. Lastly, if you want to play games as well, I would go with the 7800GT, because if I'm correct, video editing is more CPU than GPU, sorry if that's a blind guess.
As for a case, it depends what kind you want and how much money you want to spend. Lian-Li and Thermaltake are both very well build cases.
Hope this helped you, and welcome to overclock.

First of all get the Opteron, like Kevin say's it has 1MB of L2 cache on each core compared to the 512Kb on each of the 3800+'s cores.

Video editing is more CPU based than GPU based but a strong GPU is necessary, a 7800GT would do just fine and you also have the option to get a Second card and utilize the motherboard's SLI function.

Stick with the A8N32, is a good Overclocking motherboard and it's also very stable, a must with Video editing.

You've got the right idea going with RAID 1 for the main drive but i think that you should get a second 300GB Drive and put them into RAID 0 instead of using the RAID 1 on the main drive's, Just use Software to backup the main drive(s).

AMD doesn't use DDR2 so you'll need to change your RAM, some Corsair 3200 Pro XL should do quite nicley.

As for the sound card i'd say get an X-Fi, and as for the case a Lian-Li PC60, Thermaltake Shark or a Thermaltake Tsunami

The RAID 0 Array will give you a much needed speed boost when compiling Video file's, i'd estimate a 40% write speed increase

Somehow my reply got scrubbed, so I'll once again back the 7800 all the way. Lian Li does make some very nice cases, and if you ever think about water cooling, try to snag a full tower.

The RAM is depandant on your OCing or not!
the OCZ Platinum REV2 would suit you very well either way!
On the sound... OB is good and you could try it out and upgrade later if your not happy with it!

So far your on the right track, i would go for the 7800GT, get coolbits at guru3d.com if your card doesnt come with overclocking features, oc the thing and enable openGL/Hardware graphics within the video editing program, im a gamer and a hard core video editor and i create alot of motion graphics, but i would recommend the A8N-SLI and as far as a sound card, its a must i like the Creative Labs line of sound audigy cards and im going to recommend a nice peice of equipment that will cost less then $30 a 11 in 1 card reader, its a must aswell, i recommend getting an external unit for mobility.
