Yes, the os will recognize them as 2 seperate drives, with no performance increase. You will lose data only if a drive fails, like this
2 seperate drives
80 80fail = 1 hard drive operational, 1 drive failed
80 + 80fail (for a total of 160 on array) = array failure
Ask yourself how many hard drives have up and quit on you? It's not likely it will happen, but then again, it's why we all back up our drives.
In my opinion the risk is worth the performance benefit.
