yea I dont think I should have much of a problem with my 9800 bottle necking my cpu I got a handpicked 9800gt and once I put better cooling on I can go further because it oc's like a dream but it overheats at 800mhz.
Im going to try what you said omari.
Here is a little bit of what I have been putting together for the Club.

Using RealtempGT XS Bench.
1. 2.2ghz 220x10 = 729
2. 2.3ghz 230x10 = 769
3. 2.4ghz 240x10 = 803
4. 2.5ghz 250x10 = 836
5. 2.6ghz 260x10 = 868
6. 2.7ghz 270x10 = 899
7. 2.8ghz 280x10 = 936
8. 2.73gh 260x10.5 = 903
9. 2.78gh 265x10.5 = 930
10. 2.83gh 270x10.5 = 947
11. 2.86gh 260x11 = 956
12. 3.12gh 260x12 = 1041
13. 3.18gh 265x12 = 1054
14. 3.24gh 270x12 = 1073
15. 3.30gh 275x12 = 1105
16. 3.36gh 280x12 = 1110
17. 3.38gh 260x13 = 1118
18. 3.51gh 270x13 = 1164

excellent demonstration of CPU clock scaling across multiple tests, thanks for this great contribution

You go ahead and try what i told you cause it would really suck if your FSB wall is past 270

but its 99.99% unlikely

Yea I just hit 3.9ghz at 300x13 and it was perfectly stable 29c idle and 51c load prime tested after 3 hours. Vcore was at 1.35 which isnt bad at all. my ram was still 1:1 and 4-4-4-12 timings at 2.0v

But I lowered the multi to 12 and am going to run it at 3.6ghz because I can get that with only 1.29vcore and my ram is still the same.

excellent news i bet you can reach 4Ghz + with if you increase you CPU v by 0.01v or 0.015v

also i don't think you can take full advantage of your CPU @ 3.9 or 4 with a 9800GT, i even doubt that you GPU isn't already bottlenecking your CPU @ 3.5 3.6

Those Dual core CPU's get really fast and i DO MEAN FAST as you ramp up the speed because not only your are increase your CPU speed, you FSB is providing much better bandwidth as you raise it and the L2 Cache speed is identical to the your CPU speed so that increases too, now i do hope that you have your RAM running in dual channel configuration (just like i did yesterday, bought another stick of Kingston 1x2GB DDR2 800MHZ and now i have 4GB total running in DC mode) because this will double your bandwidth and increase your CPU's overall connection with the MB and hence it's performance

What are the VID's you guys have? I bought an E5300 at Microcenter that has a 1.2875 VID, which seems pretty bad for a 45nm chip. Fortunately I didn't need a great OCer, since it was going into a computer I built for my brother out of spare parts. The chip did 3.4Ghz(378 x 9) stable at stock voltage of 1.2875, but demanded more juice after that. Not what I would call a good OCer. My Q9550 did 3.5Ghz in the same motherboard at 1.13v under load.

nah, 1.2865 VID for an E5300 is fine

i am using a stock cooler and i can have:

3.5Ghz @ 1.21 under load max temp 58
3.6Ghz @ 1.28 under load max temp 62
3.75GHz @ 1.32 under load max temp 68

this is using a stock cooler

but my CPU is mostly an exception cause very few E5300 can get to 3.75Ghz on stock Intel HSF

The norm for an E5300 with stock cooling is 3.6-3.65Ghz with no effort, the 3.75Ghz that i achieved needed a bit of various voltage tweaking before i got it stable

so the rule is

With stock Intel HSF 3.6-3.75GHz max
With a good HSF 3.8-4Ghz+ is possible with this CPU

Oh and you have your Q9550 OC by 1Ghz with ease but so can the E5300 owners, after that, its a matter of cooling and voltage tweaking, the Q9550 might have the edge but any CPU that OCs by 40% with ease is an OC'ing beast in my book

Hi guys.

I made a thread about this before the OP directed me here.

Just built a new HTPC, and this is my first attempt at ever overclocking one of my built systems. I'm hoping I could get some help.

Using stock heatsink, my PSU is OCZ 550W Fatal1ty branded, my case has two 80mm fans (it's a Lanbox Lite).

So, I'm not looking to push this thing too high...only what I can get with stock cooling.

My mobo is Asus P5QPL-VM-EPU
GPU is Raedon HD 4650 (1GB)
4 GB (2 x 2 GB) Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR-2 800 MHz RAM
And, of course, the Pentium E5300.
  • Now, I was told I need to lock the PCI-e to 100 MHz?
  • And then, simply increase the FSB in small increments, make it to Windows, and run stress tests?

It's very hard to find these options in the BIOS. I see the below two things...are these what I'm looking for?

PCI-Express Frequency [AUTO] (So, I lock this at 100 MHz?)
CPU Frequency [XXX] (So, this is where I'd increase the FSB?)

No issues in getting the stress test software; I've got all that. My main issue is making sure those two things are all I need. I don't really want to mess with changing voltages if I don't need to. Also, I'd like to keep my RAM running as fast as possible. Not sure what I need to do with this...though I've seen things like "keep it 1:1".

Does this link show me anything?

Thanks for the help!

yeah those two settings are right and keep it @ 1:1 but its not that easy, this thread has a lot of information on how to overclock your E5300 read all the pages and if you're still confused ask away
