1000/100/10 LAN, settings? Problem.

Thread Starter
Having trouble setting my network adapter to 1000mb/s.
And i know that my connection speed is well over 100Mb/s.
you can set what you want the network adapter speed to be, but when i set it to 1000mb/s it will not connect to LAN, or have limited or no connectivity.

Two factors:

1) Is the router\\other card enabled for gigabit?
2) Is the cable your using gigabit compatible?

If u are using a motorolla modem from comcast chances are thats only 100mbps, in any case click on start control panel, network connection right click on which connection u are using then click on properties then click on configure then advance tab look for speed and duplex click on auto sensing. that should automatically detect if ur modem is 1gps or 100mbps

If it's plugged directly into the modem then you're luckey to even get 100Mbps. Not that it will be limmiting your connection in any way shape or form.

the problem with gigabit is, its all fine and well having the ability to transfer upto 1000mbps but its no good for tranfsering files, nor gaming. usually the maximum that can be transfered is only 15mbps. When ever i set up an ethernet connection the fastest its ever gone was 20mbps for about 1o seconds on full duplex (not simplex).

The only reason I can see for having gigabit is for a cluser :/

not to mention the cables and switches cost alot more

Yeah, cable internet is about 4-8MB/s depending on where you live, so even 10MB/s is wasted, forget about 100 or 1000! lol.

For lan transfers gigabit can be useful. I was getting 380Mbps between two computers and with 100 lan I get 90 at best.
