Ridiculous Airflow

I need some opinions on airflow for my current project here:http://www.overclock.net/case-mod-wo...ry-length.html I originally planned on this setup: (the cardboard box thning is a placeholder for where the PSU will be) ,

but with the thought that more fans is better, I thought about shoving even more into the case with this setup:

Any ideas as to which would be better? My thoughts are that the first one might not get enough cool air to the CPU cooler (which will probably be the Mugen 2), and that the 2nd would cause too much turbulence.

After a little more thinking, I wonder If using the second setup but without the two extra rear fans would be better.

SO MANY OPTIONS!!! I'm open to any suggestions.

You need fan filters or you'll get lots of dust build up.

Just get watercooling!

If it's a positive air pressure then there will not be much dust but still some will settle.

Lol . I won't have to clean my room with this many fans, all the dust will just get sucked into my PC! I might add a vacuum cleaner bag for easy cleanup!

Water-cooling is too expensive for my taste. I can get tons of fans for like $3 a pop.

I think they are both wrong to be honest.... How ever if you were only going to pic from these 2 con figs i will take the first one. Only if you have some really big case feet.


The best choice i think would be to take the second one and make the "Mid" fans face the other direction towards the back. So the air flows from front to rear not rear to front.

I've made some massively tall case feet out of some rubber chair feet. They are just shy of 2" tall and are pretty stable. I figure 2" is plenty of room on the bottom of the case for the bottom intake fans to get all the air they need. I could be wrong though.

I thought about having the CPU HS fans exhaust out the back but then they would be working against the PSU fan which would be pulling air the opposite direction.

I'm open to any configuration. The two I drew where just a couple of ideas, so if they wouldn't work, please enlighten me!

A few problems I see: The video card will get in the way of the airflow, and don't do the second one if they are really high cfm fans, it will cause too much turbulence.

What you should do, is get an pci-e x16 riser so you can bend it and lay the video card horizontal, against the mobo. Then buy another mugen 2 and mount it on the card. Then the card won't get in the way of the airflow, and you'll have awesome cooling for it .

Depending on how extreme you want to make it, you could also remove the psu from its case so the airflow could go bottom to top. Or just mod the psu's case a little and put two 120mm fans in push/pull.

more fans is not always better, it's about smooth continuous airflow.

Air in the bottom/front, out the top/back.

--Flip the fan in the PSU so that is draws air in vertically through it's bottom and then turns it towards the back (make the fan exhaust not intake).
--Make the fans on the back exhaust
--put a fan in the front bottom intake
--Remove the front most top fan (above the PSU) as it will cause negative pressure in the case as there is no good orientation (intake or exhaust) for it
--Orient your Mugen 2 to blow air up out the top (pull is more important than push here)
--If you use 3$ fans this will either sound like a hovercraft or it's not going to move air regardless of the number. Get some decent fans and a fan controller for the ones that won't plug into the mobo (or just go for antec tri-cools)
--In fact, just do Antec Tricools to make tweaking air flow rates easier.

After everything (ONLY fans, PSU, HSF and a cardboard placeholder for your GPU - NOT the mobo, hdds etc.) is in the case, jumper the PSU so the fans all come on without the computer booting, get a smoke machine, fill it with mineral oil (which is non-conductive) and blow smoke on the lowest setting into different intakes and see where it flows to. Make sure there are no swirls in your flow and if there are tweak fans speeds until they go away. These are called stagnation points and they are BAD for cooling systems.

Once you are satisfied that you have laminar flow through the case, boot it and benchmark the hell out of it.
