Ground is ground, the PCIE bracket should suffice. If you had it grounded correctly and were getting those readings then yes it is fluctuation and there is no voltage going to those spots. Make sure it has good ground before we rule out the dead power phase. Im crossing my fingers cuz I really want to see this mod work.

EDIT: Or you can touch the copper on any of the screw holes in the card, and keep a steady hand as to not short anything out

Alright I properly grounded it this time and...

The top one gives no reading what so ever.
The bottom two both give 12.21

Man if there is power going there then you are set for take off, cap it out. Might unlock another power phase. What do the rest of you think?

What caps would I need? Could I just pull some off a dead PSU or is there a certain kind?

Will be OC'ing to it's limit stable (atitool for 5 mins, or is there a better stress test?) before and after caps

You'll want pretty much any 2.5v or 6.3v cap. Most the one's off PSU's are 16v and 50v, which would work, but a little big.

I would go for the same rating caps as what are on the rest of the card. i personally use ATITool for artifact testing and then I run games and benchmarks for further stability testing. It would be nice to see before and after tests to verify its potential for a mod. Also keep an eye on those temps when pushing it to the limit and put the fan on 100% until you find its threshold. If you cant take the noise and if the temps are acceptable then you can lower it but I just keep my fan rocking out at 100% and I turn up the logitechs when Im fragging

You shouldnt have to worry about your temps then. Also what Pizza said about the caps would be sufficient as well

So bigger ones (in terms of volts) would work? I don't see 2.5s and 6.3s at radioshack's site but if I buy the pack of 20 it has them. What does the uF mean on it? Should I check for a certain one? (I knew I shouldn't have skipped physics so much..)

if the voltage is 12.2 volts wouldnt he want to use 16v caps, most cards use 16v caps on their input phases..

also you should be able ot use any exposed metal in your case as ground
