Cooling idea!

Everyone has seen the Aluminum HSF's and the Copper HSF's with the plastic fans...but has anyone seen an HSF with a Copper or Aluminum fan?

I thought it might be a good idea since the moving air would cool the fan, which in turn would lower the temps and the variance in temps for the air entering the the HSF...which hopefully will lower the overall temps.

What do you guys thing?

Yeah, I have seen aluminum fans.

You cannot make the blades out of copper or aluminum for safety reasons, anyways, copper heatsinks would generate a lot of noise, weigh too much and would cost waaay too much money (the $40 range).

If you could get a way to sufficiently draw the heat from the fins of the heatsink to the fan's housing, then it could help. I doubt it'd be too much, though, because the heat wouldn't actually be able to transfer to the blades, just the housing. The housing doesn't have very much surface area, and therefore wouldn't dissipate that much heat. But it definately couldn't hurt (as long as you can find an aluminum fan with sufficient CFM).

copper wouldn't work because it is too soft a metal, although I have seen a few 120mm aluminum fans.

copper seems just as maluable as aluminum...so why don't they make a fan out of it..I understand the saftey thing, but it should help an incremental bit...and since all of the air hits the fan blades as it passes through the fan toward the HS, it should get cold itself...and possibly transfer

just an idea...

Thanks for the link btw...rep+

try to bend 10ga aluminum and copper then tell me they have the same amount of rigidity... it would take an imparactical amount of copper and a larger motor to make a viable fan from copper.

how is the fan working out for you? is there a difference in temps at similar RPMs compared to other 92mm fans? and what is it that you are cooling with the fan(s)?

Well, the fan might pick up heat, and send the heat into the heatsink, unless the fan is backwards, which may allow for cooler temps with a copper/aluminum fan. And aluminum is more brittle and ridged (stated above by deathdispenser) than copper.
