P6T V2 Bios/Battery

When I unplug the power supply my bios settings go default. With the power supply plugged in my systems works normally and bios settings are saved. I have cleared cmos with the battery out. I may have put the battery in backwards but I have no reference as to what the polarity of the socket is. I have searched and searched. Found that it may be a dead battery and that is fine. I can replace it. My questions are.

1. What is the correct placement of the battery in the socket?
2. If the battery is installed backwards will it damage the bios chip?

Thanks in advance for noobish quesitons.

Correct way round is top of the battery toward the ram. As far as im aware, shouldn't break anything if its in backwards.

I had the battery in backwards. Flipped it around (round side with part number) towards ram. I think the battery is dead because after I shut the power supply of the bios went to default. Gonna get a battery later. And with the battery in backwards no ill effect on the bios chipset.
