System: From Crap to Quake 4 in under $200

I know alot of you guys are just thirsty for a good overclock story. This roxxed my soxxed.

My brother came down for New years this year and brought his computer. He was complaining that it ran slow, lagged, and was generally crap for gaming.

So I told em to bring his comp with him and we'll see what we can do. Heres what he had (rofl)

AMD Sempr0n 2400+ (1.6 ghz)

PC Chips M825G (Rev 9.2)
333 Mhz fsb
AGP 4x
Chipset KM266 Pro.
2x 15GB ATA33 HDDs (*****)
Radeon 9250 (128 MB editon)
512 MB PC2700 Kingston ram

So first thing. We found a great HDD deal at best buy. Got a 7200 RPM Ultra ATA100 120 GB for $80 w/ a $60 mail in rebate. so actual cost was about ~$20

Bought a Geforce 6600 (NOT A GT, just a standard 6600) AGP 4x w/ 256 DDR from zipzoomfly for $112

512 MB PC-2700 from local comp shot for $50.

Installed all of it.

It was a PC CHIPS motherboard.

BIOS had an fsb setting I raised to 198 Mhz (DDR, 396)
There was an option in BIOS in the overclock menu to run memory at -33 from the CPU which kept the memory from going over 363 Mhz. System ran stable with Prim95 and sisoft burn in.

System now is identified as a Sempron 2800+ (2800+ stock is 1.8 Ghz, so its a 2800+198Mhz, 2 Mhz from a 3000+ heh)

I sucessfully got his Sempron running at ~2 Ghz, with stock cooling.

The Gigabyte 6600 has a massive passive (heh, that rhymed) heatsink on it. So I mounted a nice 37.5 CFM 80mm fan on it. Which made the card idle at 28c and load at 34c.

Overclocked the Geforce 6600 to over GT speeds from default of 400/500 to 500/550. That 80mm fan kept this thing cool. it now idles at 37c and loads in at ~52 - 55 c.

Now remember, all the 6600s have PS3.0 and VS3.0 just like the 6800,7800 series. Only diff is transisters and memory (GDDR3)

So I ran the Luna demo (which was deisnged to run smooth on the 7800s and does.) using fraps I could see it pumping out in the low 30s. Which to the naked eye is smooth (not silky) but smooth. So I loaded Quake 4 and the system ran it nice at ~60fps at 800x600 High Quality.

3dmark03 posted 5663

I ran the Half Life 2 Video Stress test in Counter Strike Source at 1024, and all settings high. Cranked in 63.7 fps average.

So $20 HDD + $112 Gigabyte 6600 standard + $50 ram = $182 Kick ass upgrade.

So for anyone out there with a looooow budget and a desire for better gaming there ya go.! heh!

Update on this:

We now have dual 80mm 41.42 cfm fans on both front and rear heatsinks.

the card never gets over 30c even on load.

core is running at 535 from a default of 400. and the memory is running at 565 from a default of 500.

Pretty much any game runs smooth at 1024x768.

I loaded FEAR on it and the benchmark at high settings had it at 75% over 40 fps.

Just to be on the safe side, we altered the clock speeds a little.

Here are some screenshots of various readouts.
NOTE: the last photo titled Overclock Information tries to read the GPU core as DDR. rofl, and doesn't read the momry clock correctly.
For some reason the Gigabyte 6600 doesn't come with the standard temp / clock readers.
