[geek3d] AMD Tries The Rebranding With Mobility Radeon HD 5145 and 5165

Rebranding seems a pleasant feeling for GPU makers. After NVIDIA with its GeForce 310, it’s now to AMD to try video cards rebranding (but this times it’s for notebook graphics cards!).

The new Mobility Radeon HD 5145 and Mobility Radeon HD 5165 are based respectively on the 55-nm, DirectX 10.1 Mobility Radeon HD 4600 and 4800 GPUs.

It turns out they have a marketing department too!

Seriously tho nVidia takes rebranding to the XTREME! Whatever, business is business. More power to them and AMD.

Please...thats a lapy card that no one cares about. On the other hand G92 is still a mid range chip so the multiple name changes are not cool.

But it's still a mid range chip?

At the end of the day, all that matters is performance, not name.

And P.S. laptops outsell desktops.

Is it just me or are those parts being binned as a lower part though. Which isn't like nvidia making the GTX260M into the GTX360M.

Rebranding is a reality that every company goes through.

Especially for lower end cards. If you look at a retail shelf and see

HD5970, HD5870, HD5850, HD5770 and then HD 4870, HD 4670

One Shelf Below it

GTX295, GTX285, GTX275, GTX260, GTS250

Most consumers overlook the 4XXX cards as they appear to be a generation older and for a similar price point would strongly consider a GTX 260, GTS250 as they seem to all be in the same generation by model number.

If the masses of consumers weren't lemmings or clueless it wouldnt make a difference....... but alas..... over the cliff we go.

No it's not.

But you can't say that AMD is doing it to the extent that NVIDIA has done in the past (assuming this article is true).

Once AMD decides to rebrand a mainstream card 3-4 times over the course of two years THEN we can compare it to NVIDIA.

Having said that I am slightly dissapointed in AMD. Hopefully this isn't the start of a bad habit.
