Reviving a Socket A - Page 4

Hey the best mobo is a 880 chipset. Dual channel memory and 2 sata connection on it. Very very rare to find.

If it is the PSU then I bet it's this tanj 9800 Pro putting too much load on the +5V. The PSU has 38A on the +5V, but it's old and may be severely derated.
That is probrably an issue since it seems the +5 voltage is too low. Has to be at or around 5.0 to work properly.

The 880 chipset I believe is a VIA - OK for normal use but a good NF2 chipset will smoke it anyday. I also have a few Socket A VIA chipped boards too.

HDD is a Western Digital WD1200JB.

Also, the A7N8X Deluxe appears to be an nForce2 chipset board.

It is an NF2 board.

It would also help to know what model and version you have. Should be in white print around the PCI slots.

I'll find that out in a sec.

I know what CPU it is! It says Athlon XP 2000+ now in POST after hooking up the HDD.

Not a single one in the house.
Hey, depending on the BIOS chip used, I might have a replacement. I'd give it to you if thats the culprit. It's a common chip,

[Phoenix BIOS
D686 BIOS
Phoenix 1998]

I even have a bios removal tool to help you pull it, lol...

OK - It could be a XP 2000 T-Bred or Palomino core chip. If the core is square, it's a Pally, rectangular, then it's a T-Bred. Of course if you get it going CPU-Z will also tell you.

Make sure the replacement chip is a 256K chip - A 512K won't work if you get one for it.

Ok, it's booting up now. OS is Windows 2000 Professional. Gonna pop CPU-Z on my flash and transfer it over.

Excellent!

Look at the stepping revision if it's a T-bred. It should say either A or B and that will tell you if it's a T-Bred A or T-Bred B chip, the B's being the better of the two.
