x2 vs opteron? - Page 2

Were you asking about a single core opteron or a dual core opteron versus the X2 ?
From your description of what you are going to use it for, I would go dual core opteron 165.

Perhaps spend the money on a graphics card update?? If its going to be for games then you'll get the biggest performance boost from a new gfx card, if you get a 6600 or a 6800 you might even have enough for a 3500+ and the gfx card...

A dual core cpu will help out greatly when multitasking although the AMD x2 is slower in multitasking than a 8 series pentium. My opty seems to multitask fine burning dvds, browsing the web, FAH and using Office xp .

single core. and IMO i'd say if you want dual core, opty 170 like duke said, 10x multiplier will just rox0r compared to the 9x multi.

Go for the opteron 170, 2mb cache (1mb on each core), overclockable, and the name just sounds so cool

The Opty 146 is single core. All of the dual cores are labled with numbers that end in 5 or 0 (ie. 165, 170)

Mine seems to be a good one, I would strongly recommend the 170 it's a great cpu.

edit: Just finishing up on the 2.7ghz testing tonight and will be going higher soon, not to bad of an o/c'er.
