Ok... I think I finally figured this out. - FSB of CPU/Chip/RAM

Alright... I've been posting a few different threads recently in a few different areas because I've been trying to get the most out of my XP2400+ before purchasing an Opteron 165. After reading a bagillion articles, forum posts, and conversing with a good portion of our community... i think I finally figured it out.

- So I'm running an AMD Athlon XP2400+ which has a rated fsb of 266mhz at 133mhz x 15.
- I also have an ASUS A7V8X which has a north/southbridge chipset and an fsb controller of 333mhz.
- Finally, I have 1xDimm 1024mb Ultra PC3200 DDR400 RAM which is is 400mhz effective at the double data rate of 200 x 2.

Phew... now here was my epiphany:

With everything listed above I have a current OC (before my new Thermaltake Big Typhoon shows up) of 167 x 13 or 2171.6mhz. And I will be limited in my motherboards ability in one of two ways...

First, for argument's sake 167fsb is the same as 166 or 333mhz fsb effective which is the relative "max" for my motherboard's fsb controller. It could be slightly higher than that either way which can only be decided after doing a number of tests (3DMark, OCCT, Prime95, etc...). So BECAUSE OF MY MOTHERBOARD CHIPSET my overclocking ability (at least on the FSB front) is limited by the motherboard's 333mhz fsb. So setting my fsb over 166 is technically futile.

Second, I COULD set my fsb / mult to something like 200 x 11 or 2200mhz (stable) but this value would not be FULLY utilized due to the limit of my motherboard's chipset at 333mhz. Even though my cpu's fsb can be overclocked, and my ram can accept just above 200mhz (400ddr), my chipset can not move more than 333mhz + or -. However, such a setting would be getting the "most" out each of the components in my computer, since the chipset can probably accept something just over 333mhz in which case it would be getting all of that value.

So... Have I figured all of this correctly? I can continue to push my cpu to something like 200 x 15 stability, temperature, voltage permitting, but my chipset will never be sending more than 333mhz + or - to the PC3200 ram due to the nature of old 32bit North/Southbridge technology.

*Goes to get a Drink*

Try Gogars and see what the projected speeds you refer to actually come up as ...

I'm lost in all of that, I think you are reading too much into overclocking and the FSB.

I'm working with a 32bit processor here... AMD Athlon XP 2400+...

Gogar's not going to work.

Happens...

Seems I have minor instability on anything over 167/333mhz... So my assumption could be correct.

I've tried loosening the timings on my DDR to 3-4-4-8 but it's a no go... So I'm lead to believe that the remainder of my OC'ing will come in the multiplier/voltage department and will remain dependent upon my new Thermaltake Big Typhoon and 100cfm fan (I just like saying that).

At least my motherboard has multiplier options upwards of 22.5!!! That's right, I'm going to have the first XP2400+ running at 167 x 22.5 @ 3.758ghz!!!

Hey a man can dream can't he? But I might be able to get it up to 2.6ghz... we'll see.
