[Official] NZXT Classic series Club - Page 25

Well, I'm officially ready to join the club - which is also now official:

Hot Rod is a hot rod - stripped down to his bare essentials. I discovered how bare when I tried to POST him as you see him. No go. Turns out you need that power on switch on the face plate. I had to put that back on after this shot was taken.

I also discovered I don't have a spare DVD drive. I have a CD-ROM drive I keep for testing, but Win7 is on DVD, not CD-ROM.

There is no HD because I put an SSD in him. That's in the 3.5-inch bay.

Notice something missing? I discovered two new ways to remove Pop rivets, since I could not get at them to drill them out. An unsupported blade hacksaw did the trick with one. A pair of pliers was all I needed for the other. The bottom rivets I drilled out. And no more HD cage. That sideways idea is great, but it blocks airflow. So now it's gone. When I get a HD for data, I'll put it up in the 5.25 bay.

As you can see, I made a hole for another 120mm fan at the bottom. There is a bit of noise-damping foam next to the hole. Don't know if it will do anything, but it's worth a try.

The fan is a San Ace 9S1212F401. What looks like a hose is the fan wires with a cable cover. According to the BIOS, the fan is running at 1900 to 2050 RPM. I don't like my 29C idles, though. That basement is usually 20-21C, so I'm expecting better. I can get that good with my Freezer Pro 7 on my other i7 860. May have to re-seat the Mega.

Anyway, it posts fine. Have to order an optical drive so I can install Win 7.

Both sets of purple mounts came with Nexus fans.
I found my IDE DVD drive and installed Win7. Boots fast now.

I just put in a 9G1212M101(1). Because it lacks the high pitched bearing noise of the "Silent" fan it is much easier to take. I have put fan line extensions on all three of the fan sockets so it will be much easier to swap them.

ordering my NZXT gamma tommorow. had a bought a thermaltake element T, but this appeals more to me, so going to sell that on.

going watercooling with the case and mounting a 120 & 240 black ice GTS in there cant wait.

will a slim 240mm radiator mount easily at the top without any modding?????

They do, but they're not online here.

OK. Hotrod is together enough to show you some pics. Here's the guts:

You will note the 38mm thick San Ace 9G1212H101(1) mounted as pusher on the Megahalems, which itself is mounted in the South-North position. The snaky cable at the upper left is the fan's cable. Since taking this pic I have replaced the fan with a San Ace 9G1212P4G03, a 25mm-thick PWM-controlled fan.

The PSU is only semi-modular. It has the main ATX cable, plus a 2x4 MB power cable, a SATA cable, a Molex cable and three PCIE 2x3 cables. I have hidden the three unneeded PCIE cables. The Molex cable will power some of the fans, but for now is in a bundle at the lower right. At the far right is a 1150 RPM Gentle Typhoon. It pulls in enough air (despite being able to use the 3.5-inch bay as an intake) that the intake screen makes an audible noise. That means this will have to be a less intense fan.

Note that the MB power cable - not especially long with this PSU - has plenty of room to travel behind the MB, coming up and around to plug in at the top. In addition to the hole up there to accommodate plugs there is a slot running right and left that allows cables to come over at different places.

A closeup of the MB bay.

The toolless 5.25-inch drive system leaves windows in the sides of the 5.25 bay. The SATA cable for the ODD comes through one of those. The SATA power cable comes in behind the main ATX cable.

Also note the SATA cable in the 3.5-inch bay. The SSD is in there. The only cable that gets out into the main bay is the SATA power cable, and it doesn't impinge much. The SATA data cables come around behind and back in through the lower MB access slot. But there is lots more room, and there would be even if the HD cage were still there.

Up above the ODD is where the HD will be, when I get a HD for this machine.

One last thing. See that little socket just underneath the main ATX plug? That's the PSU fan header. It turns out that on this MB (GA-P55A-UD3P) that header supplies 12v. The cable you see is a 3-pin extension that connects up with the front intake GT-1150.

Front view.

The main driver for getting a Beta Evo (or an M59 or Gamma, the two runners-up) was that the computer must go under a shelf. Which means that top-mounted IO ports are a non-starter. So I got a front-mounted "USB 2.0/FireWire/eSATA All-in-One MultiFunction Internal Card Reader". Works great, and as you will see it has great cables.

Right side - cable management.

At the far left edge you can see the 3-pin extension cable slung over the temporary loop holding up the SATA power cable in the 5.25-inch bay. The 3-pin extension comes down the left edge to meet the plug for the fan. Although the plug looks like it's on a sleeved cable, you can see the PCIE plug. This is one of the three places I am hiding PCIE cables.

The three white cables are USB and audio cables from the multifunction board. The cables that came with the Beta Evo did not look to be long enough to go behind anything on their journeys to their destinations. The cables from the multifunction board are long. In particular, the audio cable goes up and along behind the MB tray, then comes over the slot I mentioned above. It then snakes along between a MOSFET cooler and the back IO set and plugs in. It's nearly invisible, and has length to spare, as you can see.

You can also see that there is a depression in the MB tray to allow a thick ATX cable to get to its destination. Because I was getting this cable out of the airflow, I put it out of that tray at one point, then put the Molex cable over it. There is still room for the right cover.

At the bottom I folded another PCIE cable. The third is snugged into the recess at the right edge.

In the middle you can see I made good use of the tie-down points on the MB tray. Thank you, NZXT.

Left panel.

I apologize for the quality of the image. This was taken before I went back to a non-SLR camera and before I learned to use the shot timer. In any case, what you see are two Scythe Kaze Maru 140mm fans with 120mm mounting holes mounted on the left panel of the Beta Evo. Unfortunately, there is only a quarter inch headroom between the top of the Megahalems and the grill, so no top fan.

The 38mm San Ace interfered with the 140mm fan. Although I haven't tried it yet, I believe a 120mm fan would fit next to a 38mm fan. What I have tested is the 140mm fan and a 25mm-thick fan on the Megahalems. No problem.

Finally, I want to revisit the interior of the beast:

You get some idea of how airy this case is. When I put my hand over the top grill I can feel the air coming up through the Megahalems.

One sweet case, and the computer in it is coming together nicely. I have reseated the Megahalems, so next up is fan testing.

Here are a couple pictures of my "Daily Driver" that I put into a NZXT M59 case a few weeks ago. Added 2 strips of white LEDs to the inside of the case.

My camera picks up all the dust on the inside of the window quite well.

I have no more room for expansion inside this case.
