Darn you ehume and your fan test. Now I don't know rather to go GT1850 or YL D12SH-12 for push pull. Info overload. Very nice fan test

Hi guys,

This isn't an overclocking-related question, so sorry to bother you... But I figured if anyone knew about this kind of thing, you would.

I've just set up a new PC for my (non-overclocking) family, with an NZXT Gamma case. Here's the cooling:
  • Rear fan (stock)
  • Zalman front-to-back CPU cooler
  • 120mm intake fan I've wired to the mobo side of the lower drive cage (odd that they didn't think that was important)
...and of course the p/s fans. No fans on top, nothing blowing sideways.

In a situation like this, I've always understood you're supposed to cover all unnecessary case openings because they interfere with (optimal) front-to-back airflow. If that's true, shouldn't I cover those very big top and side openings?

If so, do you recommend any particular materials or methods? (I realize I could just put packing tape over them, but maybe something for sound as well?)

Thanks for your help. Cheers, Ander

I've come to consider that to be balderdash. In any case, these NZXT cases are designed to breathe freely. Sounds like you have a great setup now.

Do consider:

Remove all unused slot covers.
Remove rear fan grill.
Test the cpu temp with and without a rear exhaust fan.

I get removing the grill (I usually do—less wind noise). But removing unused slot covers, wow... That's exactly what they always told us not to do, because the rear fan would then just pull air from behind the case and expel it to the same place.

I'll try it, though—the proof's in the temps. Thanks!

Also, for what it's worth, the guy at the PC shop where I bought the case suggested taping sheets of Bounce over the top and side vents, to still let air in but filter the dust. I'm curious to see what kind of raging controversy that might inspire here.

None really. It's not a half bad idea. Though; air filters you can buy for a car or AC/Furnace work too. Just need to be cut to shape.

Okay, I've tested the rig sealed and unsealed, idle and under load. Sure enough, unsealed is 2-3° cooler. How about that! I have to laugh, thinking about people so assiduously sealing up their cases over the years. Didn't they test? I guess the front-to-back thing just seemed to make too much sense.

And yes, we have some of those heat-register filters I could use—they'll be much more pleasant to handle than soapy laundry-conditioner sheets. :?P

Anyway, thanks again!

Resolder a green led on. Get one at the correct voltage though.
