Side fan will NOT fit over a full tower cooler.
Right now I have my NH-D14 back in my case. It has a TY-140 in the middle with the 160mm axis pointed toward the side panel. That fan stops at 1.0 to 1.5mm away from the inside of the grill that overlies the heatsink. No room for anything there.
OTOH, the Beta Evo has two side panel fan positions. In the lower fan position I have a 140mm fan with 120mm screw holes (a Kaze Maru). The 140mm fan does not interfere with the D14, as long as the cooler is east-west or west-east.
To have a fan above a full tower cooler you'd need a case more than 9 inches wide, assuming all the additional width went to the left panel side. A ten inch case would more likely accommodate that configuration.
On the gripping had, I thing you get better airflow when the case has about enough room for the cooler and not much more. You get faster flow that way.
I needed a Beta Evo because I have a height limit, and the case fits under the shelf. With no height limit I would have gotten a case with a bottom fan. As it was I had to cut out a hole for my bottom fan.
