Building $3,500 i7 rig. Input please? - Page 2

At 2.1GHz I wouldn't doubt his temperatures with such a low clock.

A few things I see:

CM690II.. A good case, but not for $3500. Try a Silverstone TJ07, Corsair Obsidian, CoolerMaster ATCS840, atleast an Antec 1200.

Hell you have a CM Comsos 1000.. why downgrade?

$175 on a sound card.. when you've got an X58 board.

$60 on 3 case fans. Get $6 Yate Loons and call it a day with a fan controller.

If you aren't going to OC... I don't know what to say. Get the i7 940 if you refuse to get the 920.

$530 on 12GB of ram. Get G.Skill if you are going for capacity and save yourself $200.

With the money you save on getting cheaper ram, no sound card, cheaper case fans.. you will have money for an Intel X25 M 80GB G2. Almost no reason to not get an SSD with this kind of budget. Don't exclude an SSD, and make the mistake that it won't be the most noticeable difference in your daily computing environment, because it will.

Things I like about this build:
5 750GBs in Raid 5... sounds sexy.
Corsair 850W
5870's
Asus mobo

well #1 mega better then h50 No water in case, And @ higher temps the mega dose win,
Yes ssd are worth the cash .
The hard drives western digital make sure you get the RE (raid edition) drives, Wd will not give you reman your drives if it fails in raid.
overclock the 920 to 3.2 EZ. it not that hard i need 1.1875 volts for 3.2 thats under volted.

See my comment to MaxS in this post. I don't like watercooling. It's my preference.
Well then I would go H50 instead of the Mega. It is proven that the H50 dose get better temps at load and idle. And the plus is there is no need to fuss with it. Its a fully enclosed loop, no maintenance required.

Also about the Dual Classy, Well for the price of the i7 950 and the P6 Premium you could probably go dual Intel Xeon W3520 with the new Classy. So for the same price or maybe $100 more I would do it, I mean why not for $100 more. Also with Dual W3520 there is noo need to OC. just keep it and 2.66Ghz and you will cream the i7 950 at its clocks.

I understand you might be aprehensive about oc'ing, but it's really not as complicated as it sounds. In this crowd, the biggest recommendation you're going to get is to go w/ a 920 and put the difference to some wc. You'll have an easy 4.0Ghz, and most of the wc gear will last you through several builds in the years to come.
Overclocking is something that I just lack the patience for. As for watercooling, I've done it and didn't like it. Won't do it again.

I don't like most of the features of the higher end cases, I've looked into a bunch, I've done my research and I think I'm completely settled on the 690 II.

I hate the Cosmos with a passion and my temps suck really bad in this case.

Sound card is because I'm kind of an audiophile and this card is amazing compared to the X58 onboard.

I like the case fans, but those are something else I might just go without.

I don't refuse to get the 920, but as it says in the OP, I'm still pending on that.

The RAM is also something I've been looking at, but I really like the Doms.

I've used the X25-M and the performance deteriorated over time, I don't want an SSD until they're more tried and true. If it comes to that day, I'll get the SSD for the OS and keep my HDD RAID.

I'll look into the classy, but I'm no where near a fan of EVGA. Do we have a link for the board?

Again, dislike the antec 1200 and the soldam don't rank high in my book. I was looking at the Corsair Obsidian though. I'll do some more research, but I still like the 690.

The Dual 1366 Classified isn't even out...

Its not out yet but will be soon. Here is pictures of it and a basic overview. I have a feeling you will change your mind about EVGA after you see the Dual Classy

I did find it and it's not for me. Even though you would love to see one. XD

Ahh I could go without seeing one but with a build with $3,500 to spend I would definitely look into it.

Also why no on the water-cooling? Any specific reasons?
