Split audio between speakers and headset on Windows 7

Thread Starter
I'm loving Windows 7, but the only thing that's bothering me is the audio options. I like the fact that you can determine which device is going to be your main audio and which will be your "communications," and I like that it tends to autoswitch for you if you disconnect your headset.

The only problem is about splitting the audio between the speakers and my headset. For example, I would like to have iTunes (or any media player, you get the picture) playing out my speakers while I have Steam messages and game sounds playing into my headset.

In WinXP I could just start iTunes without the headset plugged in for it to play normally on my speakers. I could then plug in my headset, and any program that popped up after the headset was plugged in would have sound in the headset.

I tried this in Win7, but after plugging in my headset it wouldn't get sound (I know this is because it wasn't set as the default sound device). Does anyone know how to split the audio options so that I can have sound going to two different devices? +rep to any help

Oh well, double chances to finding the solution -.-. It's hard to google this issue with such a lengthy description.

Hmm, I right click the speaker icon and go to volume control options, wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Just dickin' around trying to solve this ... I see when I go to the device mixer if I transfer the default setting it switches the program over to the other defaulted device. I'm assuming Vista didn't do a transfer, I wonder how we can get around this...

Do they make 3.5mm jack splitters? I hate having to reach down behind my computer to unplug my headphones and plug in my speakers, and then turn them on..

yes - there are y- adapters for 3.5mm jacks

i have a seperate sound card (Xonar) for my headphones/speakers.
I run my headset into the onboard sound card.

So my normal sound and my skype/msn/xfire chat is running through the onboard sound card.

i can control them separate of each other

So a sound card is the only option to fix it? That's a little disappointing
Thanks for the answer, though.

there is an option in the sound settings that if there is a viop call or sorts that it fades all other audio by ** %

Right click sound - Playback devices
Communications tab
Choose best option for yourself

Well wait, my onboard sound is a sound card and technically my USB headset is another sound card. It is a different sound device and I can swap between the two. My issue is that every application follows each other between the devices when I swap them. I can't make the sounds independant. (Allow music through speakers and games through headset for example).
