3 pin fans work for me?

Thread Starter
Im getting the Thermaltake tsunami case, which comes with two 120mm fans, and Im also getting this 120mm fan to replace the one on the Big Typhoon I am getting, ALSO I am getting this 90mm fan to replace the one in the side window of the Tsunami. Now my question is this: I am pretty sure all these fans have 3 pin power connectors, but as far as I know, my Antec Truepower 2 PSU has only 4 pin connectors to plug into. Will I have to get four of these 3 to 4 pin adaptors in order to plug my fans up? Also, do the fans plug into the PSU only, or do they also plug into the motherboard? I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

You could just plug them into spare spots off your MOBO and let your BIOS control them.

If you didn't want to do that though, it looks like both fans come with a 3-4 pin adapter.

If I remember correctly, all Thermaltake fans come with their own 3 to 4 pin adapters.

Edit: I hope you have a way to control that 12cm fan because it gets loud. Had one once, replaced it with a Thermaltake Thunderblade ( a little less air but quieter).

how many spots are there on my mobo to connect them? and if i did that, then i wouldnt have to connect them to the PSU, correct?

o, and i dont care about the loudness lol. i plan to have all of them running full speed all the time, so i dont need any way of controlling their speeds.

There are usually four of them on there. 1 for CPU 2 AUX and another one for your NB fan. So you'd probably have 2 open on your board, just do some searching for it or check your MOBO manual and it may point them out for you.

If you look at the pictures carefully you will see that they come with adapters. I remember reading somewhere that it's best to plug in fans directly to the PSU and not to the motherboard, something about less interference and more stability on the board itself.

melcar: do you think the fans that come with the tsunami case also have adaptors?

The only thing I would be warry about is that you can draw two much power through the mobo. Drawing a bunch of power through the mobo can cause voltage instability and posably worst case senerio short out you board. Its better to go with the 4-pin stuff, but not the end of the world if you dont.

No but it could be the end of the MB!
The high performance fans draw far to much load for the MB to handle and can damage it!!! Can you cay burnt up connectors and damaged MB!
