What Antivirus for a Pentium III 256mb Ram XP??

Hi hi.

Reinstalled Xp for my neighbors computer because it was infested with viruses and who knows what else.

So I need to install an Antivirus, Free hopefully!

The computer would not let me use Control Alt Delete, it said the file was infected, Same messge when I went to Control Panel! And the more things I tried it would Turn itself off.

In safe mode It would give me the same message. That the file was infected. I could not uninstall anything either. Same message, file is infected. bla bla blah.

One of those viruses that pretend to scan your system and tells you to buy their program to fix the problem. Well there where Two of those! Both scanning at start up.

I backed up their pictures and files and reformated that crazy mess up. Not worth the time and effort for such an old computer. They didnt' even have any programs other than wordperfect and that was it.

So i need an antivirus for this old computer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanx everyone.

For free, AntiVir is very lightweight and is the best free antivirus-only thing you can find. If you can pay, NOD32 is even better.

Tell them a virus has infested the CPU clock and making it go backwards sometimes. They need a new PC.

A refurb P4 runs ~$100... used even cheaper.

AVG seems to run on anything I put it on, but I'm not sure about a P3.

They have a personal attachment, apparently the dad bought it and passed away, so they want to keep it and continue using it. I thought the same thing, its not worth fixing. It is so frustratingly slow compared to what I'm use to.

I will try Antivir thank you, see if that doesn't slow the system even more. =)
I wouldn't spend more on an anti virus than the whole computer is worth. =p

Hunt around for some RAM.... the CPU is not really the killer. The lack of RAM is.

I have an old Celeron-M 1.06GHz (Tualatin) with 512MB RAM, Windows XP Pro, and it is running Symantec Antivirus 10.0... with just enough RAM left over for websurfing and Word...
