FAQ: Acceptable Temperatures for Graphics Cards - Page 4

A friend of mine had an evga 9500GT who's fan was broken. I knew the 9500GT wasn't a very ballsy card, and it had a decent all copper heatsink. Curious we did a n ATi Tool stress test to see what temps the card would hit underload. IT got up to about 85C pretty quick, and then would slowly climb. A friend was watching a movie in the same room on a different machine and we got distracted. When we looked back at the monitor the card was at 117C (steady) and still going with minimal artifacting. That was a year ago and the car still works, sans fan. lol.

I've only ever got one card to get to 100C. It was my overclocked 8600GT back in the day. And I think the heat caused some of the capacitors to burst. So one of my friends from my high school yanked them and soldered two new ones on of the same specifications (he is crazy about that kind of stuff). Works fine too.

Other than that. I cant imagine getting either of my GPU's over even 90C. Maybe it's just cause I'm running a "budget card" and the fact that I don't overclock them. My idle temps are always around 45C.

i have seen my card running at 112C when checking GPU-Z after a few hours of gaming .. this is bad right? lol

Whew this doesn't bother me for my desktop cards, but the 5870m for my laptop hits up to 90 pretty regularly. Good to know it is perfectly safe as long as I don't overuse it :]

I had a card that hit 250C I think. 8500gt. The fan broke and the thermal paste was hard. Idk how it still worked. I fixed the thermal paste then put it in a case with a lot of airflow and got it down the mid 80s. I then sent it back for warranty and got a new 9500gt back. I love BFG support.

That's pretty crazy, considering that the solder would have been dripping of the card at that point lol.

Yeah not sure if that was accurate, but it would still burn me when touched 5 minutes after I shut off the system.
