Dolphin's Single Stage Build

Thread Starter

Thoughts? thanks to all who supported me!
Cory.

Introduction

I am a high school student at a small school in Southern California, known as the Thacher School. We have a senior project, known as a Senior Exhibition which in essence is a mini thesis, and yes...you guessed it: my project is building a phase change unit...
I need a WHOLE lot of input from you guys, though you may not know it thus far, I have already garnered a large, though relatively small, amount of information from your posts and from your build logs. But now I submit to you all again for help, this time a general form of help as a 'what have I forgotten' and 'what problems will I run into' ?

Over the break, I did a series of quick Sketchup sketchs, I am planning to redo them in Autocad as I did not like the way they turned out with Sketchup, and mainly because I can... I want to get as familiar with Autocad as I can and just see what it offers over Sketchup, which I find lacking in rendering features and a little too lovey dovey.

These drawings are not entirely accurate, I need to add in a collector between the suction line and the compressor, I will do so ASAP and post the result.

well i am no pro but i am building right now too ,
my rig is a converted window A/C unit wich was free and gave me alot of parts to work with

even tho i started out with a system that is mostly thier i still had to oreder 150$ of parts to get all the things i need and another $200 in tools as no a/c shop wanted to vacuume my rig and no shop will even consider filling it , so i got my own vacume pump $87 and my own gages and manifold for another $30 and shipping is what got the total to 200$

now ur fill gas R507 is not going to be sold at ur local home depot
and any place that has it wont sell it to u without a paper saying ur sertifide

compressors . they are worth alot of $$$$ and a r507 is not ur evryday gas so u wont find an old ac or freezer runing it

so u will have to get new that will put a big dent in ur walet

if ur stuck on on useing R507 be reddy to put out alot of $$$$

u can pilage an old ac or freezer for parts but they will only be R134a or R22 that will get u down to -30c max full power with the compressor hot but working
another up side is to useing r22 or 134a u can get ur own fill kits at autozone pepe boys target wallymart

all ur tubeing i was tempted to go to home depot and buy it all thier but the class is M u need K or L IE thick wall high preshure

hope u like math and not the kind that is 2+2 calculateing ur fill charge is a bugger of a furmula and calculateing ur cap tube lenghth is worst
shure if u gave one of those to ur math teacher he would scratch his head or a while but thanks to Danfoss thier is a app called Dancap it is easy and it calculates ur cap tube lenghth and its very close
but to calculate fill charge is still a bugger and if u over fill or under fill that will throw the system off and it will at best case be a littel under filled and runn cooler worst case way to much and u will start geting flood back and kill the compresor

Shurik, as always, you continue to spew generalities as "rules" without proper experience.

Dancap: An ideal system calculation, does not apply to flooded evaporators, tiny evaporators, small condensers, running compressors outside there specifications, and in general is NOT a good place to start.

R134a cans from Walmart: Also contain oil, mix oils? Dead system. Add extra oil? Seize compressor, dead system. Mixture contains a leak proofer, dead system.

R507a: One of your everyday gases, it's not special.

Please as always, do more reading, and properly space punctuate and attempt to spell things properly. We take the time to read your posts, please take the time to make them worth reading.

Some online dealer had it listed as a 1/3 hp compressor...That seems innacurate?

www.under-the-ice.com has evaporator kits.
Condenser maybe a bit harder.

In terms of extras that I will need, I am thinking
2 x schrader valves,
filter/dryer
maybe two or three elbows to make matters easier brazing (I am not sure what we have on campus in terms of copper tubing).
What else do you think I might need?-we should have some brazing rod, though I might need/want to invest in some Dynaflow

Thanks for the clean up, mods.
