I'm assuming your RAM was 1600mhz rated? Do you think this limit would still apply with RAM rated for higher speeds? From what I read, the issue seems to be with the IMC. If this is true, than buying faster RAM would be pointless for me.

It's completely the IMC and not the sticks most of the time (though some cheap C9 1600 sticks definitely won't do over 1600mhz well.)
I've got some Mushkin Redlines that can do 1900Mhz like it was puttin jam on toast. It's no big at all. But my Core i5 650 wouldn't have any of that.
My Phenom II's were all the same with that regard too.
But my Core i5 750 was just fine ramping up the speed.
Uncore plays a big roll in what you can do as well.
