Guide: Maxing out quality in TF2

Thread Starter
Since i have seen many post on OCN claiming they have TF2 maxed, i just want to clarify what playing TF2 maxed out is.

It is NOT maxed out if you have only set the highest settings under options, there are other console commands that take a real cut in on framerate as well as greatly improving quality.

First off, just because you type these commands in console doesn't mean they will run automatically every time you start TF2.

You have to create a file called autoexec.cfg (using notepad) and save it under C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/Steamapps/{username}/team fortress 2/tf/cfg , this is where you shall put all your commands that you want to start when TF2 starts.

Here are some higher quality settings to put in your autoexec.cfg
Code:
mat_picmip -10
cl_burninggibs 1
cl_new_impact_effects 1
mp_usehwmvcds 1
mp_usehwmmodels 1
mat_parallaxmap 1
mat_specular 1
cl_detaildist 9999
cl_detailfade 0
mat_bloom_scalefactor_scalar 2
mat_reducefillrate 0
mat_bumpmap 1
mat_diffuse 1
mat_filtertextures 1
mat_mipmaptextures 1
mat_filterlightmaps 1
muzzleflash_light 1
mp_decals 4096
jpeg_quality 100
The following commands are very unoptimized and may cause even the greatest of systems to crawl:
Code:
r_lod 0
The following are commands that do increase quality but may be person preference as to if you truly want them on:
Code:
cl_ragdoll_fade_time 1600
mat_motion_blur_strength 2
mat_motion_blur_forward_enabled 1

mat_antialias 8
mat_aaquality 2
mat_forceaniso 16

mat_vsync 1
fps_max 61

mat_queue_mode 2 - Multicore Rendering forced on

Maxed = high as the settings will go. Anything above that is into the realm of "Holy crap do we have nothing better to do?!" tweaking.

It's just a game. Max the settings in the menu and then actually play it instead of fiddling with console commands.

TF2 looks extremely diffrent with these settings IMO. Without them the graphics are really quite diffrent.

Yeah, but are we going to do stuff like this for every game?

If you have ever option to the highest quality in options, then I believe the game is maxed out.
Anything else is personnel preference
I would almost consider it modding the game if you are fiddling with console commands

Yea but in all other games Valve makes there are no commands that really change the graphics that much, but in TF2 they have incredible graphics that lots of people sadly miss out on.

It's considered 'maxed' if the in-game menu options are as high as they'll go.

I can max HL2. But if I wanted it to look better still, I could throw Cinematic Mod 9 at it. Then turn some things down so I can actually play it . Fiddling with the console and using a .cfg to do so automatically is no different than throwing CM9 at HL2.

Well I don't want to fork out $200 to play a game. Playing mainly Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 is the reason why I haven't upgraded my computer for a 2 years. But EP3 delay might be a clue that Valve might be developing a new source engine.

Still, they should move forward and strive for innovation. However I bet they already have a Source 2 for Half Life 3, if not, it's gonna be a facepalm.

Id just be happy for 'real' multi core support, where as I have to deal with crashes from the console commands..
