Uh oh guys... bad artifacts...

OK, so I've had this video card for a few weeks, and I've had it running 500 MHz core and 1000 MHz memory. Today playing source I noticed artifacts, so I dropped it down to default. Just now, running it at default, I clicked 'Scan for artifacts' in ATITool and it went berserk. 1/4 of the cube had yellow dots on it and the error beep kept going off.

What have I done?

One other thing: I'm not seeing any artifacts out of game, adnd when I simply ask for the 3D box, there's nothing wrong with it. It's only when it scans for artifacts that i get trouble.

on load it gets up to about 70. But I've always heard that GPUs can handle that.

It's the memory. I have the mem downlclocked to 400 MHz.... not great, but at least the core is fine.

What could have caused this?

Looking at your case it's mATX? Maybe your airflow isn't too good and the memory is overheating. Maybe try aftermarket cooling and some Copper Ramsinks

Heat might be it... everything with a heatsink is fine, even the passive bridge sinks don't get too hot, but maybe I messed something up. Even when the mem is downclocked (438/876MHz effective) with the core OCed to 550, I got 5100 in 3DM05, so I'm not too bummed... I only payed 160 for it so it's not too bad.
