Drive bay mayhem

Thread Starter

So I'll be doing some stuff with my drive bays for the next week or two
The first little mod I'll be doing involves Antec 900 drive bay covers!

What I'm going to be doing:
1. Replace current drive bay covers with Antec 900 ones
2. Stealth my CD/DVD drive
3. Put in two blue light switches for my cathodes (in one of the covers)
4. Add two 4" white cathodes to the drive bays, and one 12" blue cathode to the top
5. ???
6. Profit

First order of business: Put in the new drive bays to make sure it fits nicely!
And what do you know. They won't just snap in like my old ones
Normally, here's where super glue would enter the project. But alas, I have none. So, I whipped out my handy dandy hot glue gun!

Pics of my glue job:

It looks fairly good... The cathodes should look quite nice behind it methinks.

My next project will be adding the switches in. I have one of them right now. I'll be running to Radio Shack to pickup another switch, a soldering iron, and some wire (if they have any?). Here's the switch I'll be using:

The round part will be coming out the drive bays, and its got a 12mm diameter. Can I use a 12.7mm drill bit and have it still be tight enough that I won't need any supports for the switch? Or should I look into finding a way to make it tighter? Only thing I'm worried about really.

More pics to come guys

UPDATE

'Tis done!!!!

5. Ziptie 120 or 80mm fans to the front bays
Which is a good idea since that will bring cold air directly into your Dark Knight cooler for continuous front-rear airflow.

That's what my Noctua fans are for

Anyways, I've got a bit of an update.
Since I'm still waiting on getting some cash (really close to getting $25 for a [basic] soldering iron and another switch), I'll be making my holes right now to test it out.

Yay masking tape

So I'll be using a 31/64" drill bit, which is around 12.3mm (yay calculators) so that should be good enough.

Will post pics of the finished holes and how well the switch fits when I'm done

Just use a 1/2" drill bit. I bet the tolerances on that switch are pretty loose anyway. What if you drill the recommended hole but the switch itself is larger than the specification says? etc.

That's why I ordered six of these drive bays.

In case I make a mistake.

Thanks for the thought though. Ya I've already measured stuff, and my choices are either 1/2" or 31/64". I have nothing in between there.

Alright so I've been doing a couple things...
Attempted to stealth my CD drive... But it didn't work out to well. Gonna do that again later... Although I might just decide to NOT use the drive at all because I don't seem to be using it a lot. I'll just keep it close by for use when I do need it...

But the major thing I got done was the switches. Drilled the holes (took quite a lot of effort 'cus the chuck on our drills can't hold a 31/64" bit) but after lots of little holes and ripping off the excess metal shavings, it looks pretty awesome!

When I get my cathodes I'll begin the soldering and then hopefully it'll look pretty amazing

So over the past week or so while my CD drive has been out of commission, I've been doing some thinking.
I don't think I'm gonna be putting my CD drive back in.
Not that I couldn't steal it well. In fact, it looks bloody remarkable (if you wanna see pics, ask ). I just feel that I don't use it enough to really care

As a result, I will have enough room to put in one of THESE bad boys!!!

I'll make that an intake fan in the drive bays... it'll be cool

Cathodes haven't come yet. Hope they get here soon... Getting a bit bored...

Well, I don't really need a CD drive. And if I ever do, I'll just quick whip it out. It's not that hard.

I haven't found myself to be using it that often. Only when I need to reinstall Windows or something.

I'll still keep it around, I just won't keep it in

I'm super ecstatic right now
This means that my cathodes should be shipping out (hopefully) tomorrow!
I should be getting them next week... I believe I picked three day shipping.
