Hey guys...have some newb OC questions..

Thread Starter
I wanna start upping the performance with my setup. I know that my setup has some potential..but have no clue where to start, plus, I wanna do everything right and take the necessary pre-cautions..

Is there any specific programs/downloads that I need to help monitor/tune?
I have nTUNE but heard that it's not that great...what is?
How far can I go with OC'ing my CPU? (i have the Thermalright XP-120 for the cpu and idles at 24-25 degrees C. but don't know how to get load temp)

I'm also intersted in tweaking my memory timings and voltages but don't know where to start... my card comes OC'ed but I won't go further with it unitil I get some better cooling for it...

Any help would be great guys and hope to deal with you guys further...thanks for your time

any suggestions with my setup?

Your setup is pretty good for overclocking. One of the first few programs you're going to want to get are CPU-Z and Speenfan. CPU-Z will show you more about your FSB, multies, etc. Speedfan is a great program for monitoring your temps. To find your load temps you're going to want to get Prime95. This programs runs your CPU at 100% by finding prime numbers for the purpose of stress testing. Once you OC you're going to want to run this program to see if you are running stable. Now onto the OCing.

Lets start simple by trying to get you running at around 2.2Ghz. Get into your BIOS and set your FSB to 220. You should be able to get this pretty easily. Once we get this we can work on your memory timings.

PS: Check out the Official AMD Overclocking Guide here. It will give you some real basic ideas on overclocking.

thanks chod'

are all the above 3 programs downloadable from the net? Is there any links to these downloads?

When I put my FSB to 220, is that as simple as just sliding a cursor? Sorry for the stupid questions.... but thanks for replying

Not as simple, but close. Do you know how to get into your system's BIOS? You should be pressing F10 when your system is booting up, and get into a menu like this. You're going to want to go into the Frequency/Voltage Control Settings. You might see something like this. Poke around and let me know what you get.

Prime95

Speedfan

CPU-Z

That's a pretty decent system all around for Overclocking, first learn the basics of overclocking by reading some guides and stickies...this way you will understand some of the terms and general "idea" behind OC'n.
A good goal for your system is to get your cpu to 2.5ghz, I know the winnys can do it, but they are no venice's
I will be glad to help you get there, Try to find the maximum speed of your memory if possible first..

thanks tytlyf...much appreciated.

I work from 8am to 10pm weekdays...my best times to start doing this would be early morning, late night and weekends. I'll keep you guys posted and if I have any questions, you guys will be the first to know....

another question...the cpu-z file i downloaded was a zip and right now it's in my WinRAR...how can I save it to my desktop...or do I still have to unzip it?
