Networking old computers

Here's the deal, my friend has been trying to network these computers he got from some place, these are ancient systems: 100MHz, something like 16 MB RAM, you get the picture. He has 2 of those, and one relatively good computer; 1GHz, 128MB RAM, etc... Anyways, I think he has DOS on the 2 and 98 on the other, he has a switch and 3 (possibly) working network cards, he could install 98 on them all, which is what I think he should do, but neither one of us is sure what to do. He wants to have a LAN with DOOM, which would be sweet, so does anybody have any tips, or could point us in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

I don't think that those old machines would run 98 well enough. He could probably look into upgrading them. I suspect that new processors and ram for something that old would be cheap (if you could find it). As it looks now those two "ancient" machines are paperweights. It has been a really long time since I played DOOM, does it manage the network all by itself? You could get away with nothing more than DOS. That just isn't something I have ever attempted.

Yes we have played DOOM over a serial cable before actually, it worked alright, but you could only do 2 computers. He has found a way to network between just DOS, but obviously it hasn't been working out too well for him. I believe those computers came with windows 95 on them, and he installed 98 and I guess they worked fine.

Well to be honest what I consider "good" enough exceeds the recomended requirements. Earlier I gave away a couple P3 500's that I considered paperweights as well. So take my comments with a grain of salt. So your friend obviously has more patience than I do. You may try and find a couple of copies of win 3.1. That should run just fine and should also be capable of an IPX network (I think).

They are not many places that still sell it. Here is one that I found

Hey thanks a lot for the suggestions. He does have a lot of patience, and I bet he will get it to work sooner or later.
