Dreadnought

As the info in my profile states, I'm new but I'm old. Nonetheless, I'm building a monster....I hope.

Quick overview:
Cooler Master 932 full tower case
TYAN Thunder N3600B Dual processor motherboard
2 x AMD Opteron 2378/2.4 GHz quad-core processor chips
16 Gigabytes OCZ Reaper HPC RAM (8 Gig per processor)
APEVIA Warlock ATX-WA900W Power Supply
OCZ 60GB SATA 2 Vertex Series Solid State Drive
XFX Radeon HD 4890 Video Card
M-Audio Audiophile 2496 Sound Card
LITE-ON Black 24X DVD Writer

I'm just at beginning the assembly. Build diary is here:
http://www.raytherat.com/dreadnought/Welcome.html

I wanna go with liquid cooling eventually. I know the Zalman Reserator 1 is looked upon as a pos, but my thought is to only use the finned tower and run upgraded pump, cooling blocks, etc. I want to cool the disk drives as well as the cpus, so it looks like I'd have a lotta plumbing (which I hate doing...I mean real life pipes and toilets and stuff) to design and build.

Fo the moment, I'm gonna go with a coupla cpu fans, but I don't know of a good one for a socket f chip, so I'm thinkin of using a XIGMATEK EP-CD901 92mm Sleeve CPU Cooler - Retail :http://www.newegg.com/Product/NewPro...-022-_-Product

Once the system is built and stable, I wanna start overclocking...but with metrics so I can see what's happening as far as temperature/performance, etc.

Ideas and input would be very welcome...except for those who'd say, "you don't need that much processor to do what you're doing." I know. But I also like to have 500 hp in my street car. I like doing it because I CAN do it.

I'm thrilled that someone is making a dual processor build. Obviously more expensive... and more power then most need, but that's not the point of it, anyway. Fantastic choices all around. I'm not sure how much 4890s are going for. I'd suggest a 5850 for a little more money, unless you already have the 4890.

I've got the HAF too, and I love it.

Awesome photography, by the way.

Thank you for the kind words. Photos done with a Canon 4D with Sigma 17-70 f2.8 lens, Speedlite 430EXII and daylight fluorescent side lights. My 7D just went back to Canon for autofocus problems and my 18-200 IS lens should be on it's way back from them. And I just picked up my 28-135 IS lens after having the zoom rails and seals replaced after 18 months of use. Canon quality is heading downhill.

You're absolutely right...it is more expensive and it's probably better suited to server duty, but I'm doing it anyway. It'll be interesting to see the test results.

I got the 4890 for $200. The 5870s are about twice that and 5850s are around $300-$330. For photo editing and other high-res rendering, I think I'll be ok with the older model. But the only way I'll know is to get the thing together and fire it up.

I'm adding another page to the build diary. It'll be there in an hour or less.

Man, where is everybody else? xD

I think this is a pretty sweet and very original build. The 4890 is an excellent card, and certainly more then enough power for editing and most high res games, so I agree that there is little need to "upgrade" to another card, especially since you already have it.

I have only used a dual processor computer once, and it was very recently. My aunt gave me an old Apple G4 with two 500Mhz processors (don't remember the exact model number). Obviously, not an impressive clock speed... and the hard drive was loaded with crappy software.

But man, that thing was (and is) incredibly fast for its age. Really struck upon me the power of dual processors, so I can definitely see a justification for such things.

Thanks for the good news about the dual proc Apple. That's really encouraging. I got some fan/heat sink deals for the Opteron chips, since I don't have the liquid cooling system designed yet.

I've been thinking of a Zalman system:
http://zalman.co.kr/ENG/product/Prod...ad.asp?idx=183
just to get the cooling tower and then adding my own pump and cooling blocks. There's something about that external tower that appeals to me. I'm gonna look for a used system...which I figger I might stand a chance of locating, since they've got lousy reviews. Maybe someone wants to unload one that didn't work out.

I lost a lotta time today with a photo shoot and then some heavy-duty (quick and dirty, too) web proof-of-concept pages to demo to a customer. Now it's 11 pm...I think I'm gonna have to give up sleep to get everything done.

Ohhh...somewhere I have a piece of paper that sez I'm retired. I've never worked so hard or long in my life. I guess it's cuz I got a slavedriver as a boss. Problem is...I'm self employed.

An update on the Dreadnought build. First here's the build diary:
http://www.raytherat.com/dreadnought/Welcome.html

I've had to go slowly because I'm squeezing this build on between other projects: WAY too many of 'em for an old fart who's supposed to be retired. I've never had so many opportunities/projects in my life as I do now. Someone once told me, "Find something you love doing and you'll never work a day in your life." Seems reasonable to me.

The Dreadnought: The project is on hold for a while...at least until the "registered memory" gets here. I wish I'd looked a little closer at the memory requirements before ordering what I thought would be compatible stuff. I guess I'm gonna have to see about either returning or selling the OCZ dimms I bought.

Anyway, it's at the point where I can power it up and gets a beep code cuz there's no memory in it. But the LEDS light up and the fans turn on:

More as it happens.

You require some water cooling my friend .

This is quite an interesting build. I will be watching!

Ray,is that an ATX motherboard or E-ATX.Either way looks great

Nice to see that your a photographer too,I'm planning on getting a Sigma 70-300 (I think thats the one anyway) for my Sony A230

It's an ATX size mobo. Plenty of room for it in the HAF 932. I really like that case.

And yeah, I know I'm gonna need some liquid cooling...especially when I start crankin up the clock. I'd like to find a system that has an external radiator and can provide cooling for the disk drives as well as the CPUs. So far, I've only come up with the Zalman units and from what I've read, they're not so hot....well, maybe that was a bad choice of words.

If I could get a Zalman Reserator finned tower, I could prolly design a system with my own choice of pump(s) and coolng blocks...I just haven't gotten there yet. But I will. Last think I need is to melt all that hardware down into a heap of smoking slag.
