GeForce 6800GS vs. X850XT

Thread Starter
Hello
I am buying a new video card and was wondering if the geforce 6800GS xxx 485mhz/1.1Ghz with 12 piplines (stock) is better than PowerColor Radeon X850XT. Many threads and benchmarks on the internet tell a whole nother story about those too cards, some say the 6800GS is better and some say not! The Radeon X850XT is 520mhz/1.08Ghz with 16 piplines. But I am very sure than I can get the XXX model to reach higher core speed than the X850XT.

Any ideas ?

If you are buying for agp, maybe you should consider stepping up your processor to 64 bit before stepping up to such high mid-range cards.

Both are great. The xt is faster, the GS supports a newer shader model. The xt Costs lots more, the gs is sub 200$.

Your processor will hold you back on both of these cards. Maybe look at a cheap 6600gt.

Your power supply is weak too, so be warry of putting power draining components in your comp.

Hello again,
I am also buying AMD Athon 64 3000+ ~ 2Ghz, and MSI K8N nForce4 16x PCI-Express.
The cards are for the same price here! But wouldn't the GeForce 6800GS be better with OpenGL games than Radeon?

Err.. Where have you been? lol. The 6800GS has been out for awhile now, and the one at 485/1100 is at 6800Ultra level, for $205 .

Not to mention that the GS will outperform a GT in some cases. I have gotten my XFX 6800GS XXX up to 540/1210 for a 3dmark05 of 6230, but after about 10 minutes of CS: S it started artifacting really hard. Right now I have it at 485/1100, I'll try to bump it up and get it stable to see what it can do.

My vote is for the GS hands down, awesome $200 card.

Now that sounds very nice, I am in for some hard OC on the new CPU and Graphic card and it would be very nice to have a stabile video card, with some proper cooling I thing it could be managed and... ofcaurse I am going for PCI-E

PS: can someone be able to unlock pip-lines on a video card? like from 12 to over that?
