P4 1.6 vs Celeron 2.4?

Thread Starter
I've got these two processors sitting around. I'm throwing together a budget PC for a friend (free) and want to get rid of the cheaper (less good processor). They are both socket 478, 400FSB.

The only differences I can find are:

1)Obviously, clock speed 1.6 vs 2.4
2) L2 Cache: P4:256k vs Celeron:128k

Does the clockspeed of the celeron make up for having half the L2 cache? Thanks for any replies.

The Celly is a bit better than the Pentium. The PR rating (approximate "power/performance" level) of the Celly is 1896 while the Pentium is 1440. Although those numbers are by no means perfect, the Celly has enough of an advantage that it should give a better performance.

First this is obviously a "old edtion" Celeron, this one is based on the Northwood core so technically it is as efficient as a Pentium 4 at the same clock speed and generation, however as you should know the Celeron is a cut down version with less features and less cache. There is also a reduction in FSB speed from the higher end Northwood Pentium 4's. However you are using an old Pentium 4 which is a Willamete core so the FSB is also 400MHz. Due to these reductions the Celeron does not perform as well to a degree, first you need to look at the sort of things you will be doing (expect the Celeron to outperform the P4 at 95%+ of all application). In direct ALU/FPU calculations the Celeron will be as fast as a Pentium 4 of the same clock speed and generation at itself. In the real world it will be faster and the gap will close between the Celeron and the slower 1.6 P4 but not by that much.

So in conclusion the Celeron will outclass the P4

Note: The Willamete cores are efficient but overclock poor, mainly as they are 180nm
