On my x850 runs bf2 fine with 5.13 drivers.
But in css when I force AA above 2x it will go crappy in css using d3d.
But it will run fine in opengl. You might select the bf2 default settings for vid, and see how that does.

Well even though you wish me to use opengl unfortunately thats not an option because i cant change it as the drivers are messed up
