Great! A thread for the i7-960!

I realize there will be some who will attack the i7 960 CPU, claiming that it is an over-glorified i7 920. They may be right. However, consider my story:

I build my rig almost exclusively off of Newegg / FrozenCPU in early Feburary 2011. At that time, Newegg didn't even carry the i7 920 or i7 930. However, at that time, Intel dropped the price of the i7 960 to $309.99, a mere $10.00 more than the i7 950. So, why not? I hope that readers will keep the original thread focus in mind, at leave some of their i7 920 victory stories in a different post, as there there are more and more of us still on the 1366 platform upping our CPU's as Intel's prices drop.

And, for my small experience. Please note that my Sig rig below is what is producing the results below.

With what You find below, I have been able to hold 4.0 GHz stable for longer than the shown 1hr test (Overnight).

And my time to ask something of the thread. I may be off my rocker, but, I somehow feel that if a i7 920 (2.66) can hit 4.0GHz with a Megahalem and two odd-ball fans (a 1400MHz increase in performance), why is it that I can only get my i7 960 (3.20) to 4.0GHz with a Thermalright Silver Arrow (an 800MHz increase)? Suggestions welcome!

Also, consider renaming the thread, "The 1366 i7 960 Owners Club" ...? If You would, I would join...?

I know this thread is quite a bit older... im actually running my i7-960 @ 3,90GHz and running 32~c idle and ~55c on load

Haven't ever seen it hit 60c yet... maybe i dont use it for long enough (max 3 or 4 hours at a time)

Anyways just running a coolermaster V8 and it seems to do the job with Noctua NH-T1 Thermal paste

Anyways.. hope that i make some sort of contribution

Well looking back at this thread, with a lot more time to take to work on overclocks, im still with the same CPU im currently running 4.525GHz at 1.446v vcore. My temps are reasonable at 42c max load and about 28-30 idle.

Ive been working with this cpu a lot to get to these clocks, but iv found with my ram if i set it to like 1082MHz ad set the timings real low to like 5-6-5-16-1T @ 1.50v it helps me get to that 4.5GHz+ mark. I Also add ~150mV additional to the VTT Vcore and it tends to help the stability smile.gif

Hope this thread is still watched...

I'm Running a liquid loops now btw...

hey guys im new to overclocking buthave been watching some videos and trying to get similar results as yours. Here are my specs:

I would appreciate a small guide or step by step to get up to 4.0 if possible

MSI X58 Pro E motherboard
Corsair DD3 1600
850w ThemalTake PSU BlackWidow
SLI GTX 560 2gb

i have tried a few things but not sure what the best settings are. I do play alot of bf3 so i need a good stable 24/7 oc. Any help is useful thank you.

Btw idle temps are usually 35C and under alot of load they get maybe to 55C. Stress test does get it up to about 72C. I am running liquid cooling, similar to a corsair H50.

As a starting point you should read some guides

http://www.overclock.net/t/538439/guide-to-overclocking-the-core-i7-920-or-930-to-4-0ghz

This should get you started. Just watch your temps and with a self contained water set up, keep it under 80 ish

I have a 960 as well and just started to get into oc'ing. I hit 4.1 on air a few months ago. It was stable for the 2-3 hour prime test I ran. I'm moving onto water cooling soon and would like to see where I can take it from there.
Alien Prime those temps are awesome, what is the ambient temp where you are at? I'm at 4.2 now on air, 1.35vcore, seem to be stable, I'm seeing how far I can push my All air during the hot summer here in New Jersey. Actually doing some stability testing right now, I'll post back later.
