Both formats are mature enough now that either can be run without many hiccups. As far as performance, you can match that up and down the line with cards from each company. I would give Crossfire the slight edge because their cards can run AA with HDR on and Nvidia cards cannot. However, you can make a fantastic system with either. Any particular budget you're looking at?

Agreed. IMO, if you want to use 2 video cards, you'd expect to be able to use AA+HDR. So I vote ATi.

SLI and Crossfire can both do that, though. As said earlier, you can match performance at any level between the 2 companies.

Obviously NVIDIA's 7800 GTX 512mb comes out on top. But with only a 300 point difference I'd say just go with whatever you like. You'll never notice any difference.
Is that the 512 1800xt, or the 256?

Crossfire pwns because you can play Oblivion at 1600x1200 with AA and HDR (why you would want AA at that resolution is beyond me... ask Chozart, IIRC he has a CF setup).

If you're on a budget I'd go for SLi since the Crossfire "Master" cards can be quite pricey and are required to run Crossfire, even if you plan to just use an X1900GT.

I've heard that when SLI first came out, ATI cards actually ran better in it than Nvidia cards. Nvidia has since "fixed" this by disallowing ATI cards to run through crossfire. IMO, the technologies are virtually the same they just use them in different ways. Sometime I'd like to see somebody mod cards to run in the competitor's boards and see what combination is best, it would be entertaining at the least.
